Removing the XFX 8800 GTS 320MB XXX from the package nothing gives it away at first glance as a toned down version of the full strength 8800 GTX. You have to pry the stock heat sink and fan off the card to see that NVIDIA simply left half the memory chips off to get the price down to where the consumers shopping for a mid range graphics card are buying.

When it comes to performing well in today's current games the XFX 8800 GTS 320MB XXX edition graphics card is no slouch. In some cases, it was very near the class leading 8800 GTX, which speaks volumes about the kind of gaming experience you can expect. I was more than a little skeptical when I first heard that NVIDIA planned to bring a card to market with half the memory size of the standard GTS but I have been thoroughly impressed with the performance of the XXX 320MB card. It delivers exactly where it counts, at resolutions the largest percentage of the market actually games...

On top of its regular GTX, XFX has now launched a couple of GeForce 8800 GTX SKUs that are pre-overclocked right out of the box. We've managed to get our grubby mitts on the fastest - a 630/2000-clocked version. Read on to find out if it's £460 well spent.

The 7600GT Fatal1ty card has some good and some bad points. The good is that it is the fastest available 7600GT card on the market today with clockspeeds exceeding the other 7600GT cards by a good margin. The card is quiet, meaning that if you're wanting a silent system, this card is the card for you. It also carries the "Fatal1ty" brand, which kids may see as cool as this gamer is on TV with shows like "60 Minutes." The 7600GT is Vista Premium ready meaning that it will run the new Aero Glass interface.

With the official release of the NVIDIA G80 based high end video cards in November last year, it is only a matter of months before we see new mid-range mayhem released for every budget minded gamer out there. At the very last moment XFX decided to satisfy gamers with one of the last G70 based video cards, their 7600GT Fatal1ty edition features passive cooling and faster clock speeds at a competitive price. How much faster? We find out.

The card is pre-overclocked to such an extent that XFX claims that this is the fastest 7600 GT available. Not only that, but it also uses a passive cooling solution, making it completely silent. All this comes with a minimal increase in price (£5-£10) over standard spec cards, which certainly looks like a winning combination.

The XFX GF 8800GTX 630M 768 M Dual DVI TV XXX Edition video cards is an interesting addition to XFX's lineup. The card is overclocked over the standard 575MHz core/1.8GHz memory 8800GTX, but in many respects the card is CPU limited even on a AMD FX-62 CPU. If you want the fastest, most feature-rich card today, the XFX GF 8800GTX 630 M 768 M Dual DVI TV XXX Editions is it. Ryan, the PR person for XFX says the card should retail about $50 more than the standard card, making it a good choice for those with a Core 2 Extreme X6800 or QX6700.

The 8800GTX is the fastest single graphics card on the market today bar none. The performance with two of them just flat outperforms everything on the market and then some when it works. Two of these cards working together in SLI flat out allows gamers to play games at Ultra High Resolution gaming like 2048x1536 or 2560x1600 with little trouble as long as the rest of the system including the PSU matches up to the requirements.

Today we will just look at the performance improvements and compare the 8800 GTX XXX performance to the performance of the stock 8800 GTX. The only place that the 8800 GTX XXX differs from the stock 8800 GTX is in the clock speeds. The stock 8800 GTX is clocked at 575 MHz on the core and 1.8 GHz on the memory whereas the XXX version is clocked at 630 MHz on the core and 2GHz on the memory.

NVIDIA really came to play with the 8800 GTX and in SLI you can bet that just about anything you can throw at them will run as smooth as silk. I spent several days with the cards in my own system trying to find something that could bring them to their knees and only found a couple of games that did just that. While not a wildly popular title, Marvel Ultimate Alliance can absolutely kill a single 8800 GTX at just 1920x1200 with Dynamic Lighting enabled. Throw in some AA and you have a card that is just able to keep the frame rates playable.

A pair of 8800 GTX cards in SLI is a different story. I have never played Oblivion when it looked this good, and actually been able to move. I turned all the settings to high in the Oblivion settings, save the AF which I turned off in favor of HDR. With the 8800 GTX cards you can get both AF and HDR at the same time by enabling AF in the NVIDIA control panel, which I did.

The differences between the 8800 GTS and the 8800 GTS are few, though they affect performance of the cards significantly. The 8800 GTS has 96 stream processors compared to the 8800 GTX's 128 stream processors. The 96 stream processors of the 8800 GTS are clocked at 1.2 GHz as compared to the 1.35 GHz clock for the 8800 GTX. The 8800 GTS also only requires one PCI Express power connector and has one SLI connector per card.

If you've got a little more than £200 burning a hole in your pocket and you're desparate for a new video card then GeForce 7950 GT represents a solid purchase. However, if you've already got a recent video card in your system (GeForce 7800 GT / Radeon X1800XL or higher), we'd recommend holding tight for another few months.

When XFX designed the GeForce 7950 GT 570M Extreme they took the NVIDIA reference design and overclocked it just a bit, which is nothing new to the graphics card industry. XFX then went against the flow and used a passive cooling solution on the overclocked card! The end result was music to our ears. The 570M Extreme is a truly silent graphics card that can play all the latest game titles without the roar of a fan. Even though the card is overclocked we found it to consume less energy than other cards in its class and it passed the 'light test' as our ceiling lights didn't dim when the card was being used under full load.
