The HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc format war is finally over. Now that Toshiba and Mircosoft have both jumped ship on HD-DVD, for the first time in at least a dozen introduced media types Sony finally has its moment of glory with their Blu-ray Disc format. This news is exactly what movie buffs and storage moguls have eagerly awaited for more than a year, and now that the casualties are cleared it's time to get productive and introduce new products built from the blue laser technology.

It feels like Blu-ray vs. HD DVD discussion has been ongoing for ages, but neither Blu-ray nor HD DVD gained any significant market share from PC market. However, prices are getting lower each month. Recently, Asus released BC-1205PT BD Combo, Blue-ray reader with DVD burning features, but is it time for Blu-ray on your desktop yet?

ASUS hopes to bring HD content to the masses by offering a cheaper drive that only has read capabilities for Blu-ray media. It can still write to DVD media however but will it catch on with the public? Read on for our take.

I?m not going to lie to you - I'm a complete and utter Blu-ray fan boy, "down with HD DVD!!"; so when word came that the ASUS BC-1205PT Blu-ray ROM samples were ready to be shipped out it pretty much had the two thumbs up approval from me. What we're going to look at today is if the BC-1205PT is not only able to replace that DVD ROM of yours but also be welcomed with open arms into your home.
