Seagate has introduced to us once again the largest consumer drive available, and we have it on our testbench. Surprisingly, not only does it have much more space than the previous 500GB model, it also proves to be much faster. Let's take a close look at the drive, and see just what perpendicular magnetic recording can offer us...

Seagate has pushed the capacity of their desktop drives even further with the release of the Barracuda 7200.10 hard drive. That's three quarters of a terabye of storage space in a single drive! The Barracuda 7200.10 is not the first Seagate desktop drive to support the new SATA 3Gb/s transfer protocol. Neither is it the first Seagate desktop drive to support NCQ (Native Command Queuing). But it is the first 3.5" drive from Seagate to feature the new Perpendicular Recording technology which we first saw in the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 hard drive. Thanks to Perpendicular Recording, this drive features a much greater areal density. This should translate into a higher media-to-buffer transfer rate. Of course, we can only be sure after we put this drive to the test. Then we will see how well it actually performs...
