I have to say that I'm impressed with the Asus EAH3870 X2 graphics card - it's quite a step away from the reference design and innovation like this should be encouraged. The inclusion of four DVI ports will be a welcome addition for anyone looking to run more than a couple of monitors on their workstation and what makes it even better is the fact that, unlike Nvidia's SLI, ATI CrossFireX technology scales across multiple displays. There is no need to disable CrossFireX in order to enable multi-display mode - and believe me when I say that is a big thing for anyone like me who is a gamer but also runs multiple displays. It's for that reason alone that I have never used a GeForce 9800 GX2 or GeForce 7950 GX2 in any system that isn't used for testing purposes - it defeats the object of having a single graphics card for me because it has all the compromises of SLI.

We like the HD 3870 X2; generally speaking it gets good gains at high resolutions in most applications we test. The single PCB design is leaps and bounds ahead of the original dual GPU offering from NVIDIA under the 7900 naming scheme. We've seen pictures of the HD 3870 X2 from ASUS before, but now it's our chance to get down and dirty with it to see if it's worth spending the extra money the ASUS cards generally carry with them. The ASUS bundles on a whole are pretty good and give you everything you would expect out of a high-end card. You do pay a premium for ASUS cards which give you little extras like the CD Wallet and a more recent game.

Does a multi-GPU setup with one card interest you? You may want to take a look at AMD's latest high-end offering, the HD 3870 X2. We are taking a look at ASUS' version of the card which features a fantastic bundle, including an HDMI adapter and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts.

Last year hasn't really been the best one for AMD- with Intel and nVidia dominating performance in the CPU and GPU sectors respectively. AMD launched their Phenom line of CPUs and their HD3700 line of GPUs that fare well on a price/performance ratio, but for the power user demanding the most out of their system, AMD simply wasn't a choice. The start of 2008 might bring some good luck to AMD with the release of their X2-3870 graphics solution.

The AMD(ATI) Radeon 3870 X2 - codename R680 - has been spoken off on websites for a long time and said to be the return of AMD/ATI to the high-end arena and capable of challenging the GeForce 8800 series. ASUS is once again one of the first manufactures to introduce the latest products from ATI and we at HARDiNFO we will be testing this new contender for the performance crown. Join us as we square up the Radeon HD 3870 X2 against the GeForce 8800 competition and see what this new-comer has to offer.
