Intel has really pushed forward into the Express chipset lineup with the new 4 series being touted at what the 3 series should have been. It seems like the 3 series was just a stepping stone and the 5 series isn?t all that far away. But that's for a totally different processor architecture. So far, we have already had the early P45-DQ6 and MSI P45 Platinum cross our paths. Today we are looking at another big wig P45 offering, namely ASUS' P5Q Deluxe Motherboard. Featuring its EPU6 energy saver, DDR2 and a wide array of features including Express gate, ASUS hopes to topple the likes of GIGABYTE and MSI. Let's see just how well it manages to perform.

Asus has appealed to the budget conscious, feature loving, overclocking enthusiast very well indeed even though some of these features are mutually exclusive in use. It's not perfect but it's evidently a clear that this is a thorough evolution over previous Asus products, even previous P35 boards as a whole. It's raised the bar massively for what mainstream should be compared to the previous generation, yet in almost every area it's still left us wanting more. Its hardware features are innovative and daring, but we find ourselves rhetorically questioning "would I actually use it though?" If yes, then jump on it like it was made of gold. Asus has proved that its P45 P5Q Deluxe is a step up from P35, and almost emulates X48 but for far less money: it has our vote for this reason alone.

Intel's P45 is due out next month, but the boards are already rolling in. Our first look is at ASUS' P5Q Deluxe, a DDR2 offering that's feature-packed and comes in at a great price. Features include a layman's RAID tool, updated Splashtop, lots of connectivity, a great layout and more.

As many of you are no doubt aware, Intel is planning to officially release a new mainstream chipset in a few weeks, the P45. From a feature standpoint, the new P45 is somewhat similar to last year's P35. The P45, however, will have official support for PCI Express 2.0, with a more flexible lane configuration for multi-GPU graphics, and the chipset itself is being manufactured at 65nm as opposed to 90nm. Using the more advanced process to build the chips should result in lower power consumption and lower operating temperatures as well. The P45 will also be paired up with a new ICH10-series southbridge, which is similar to the ICH9 sans a few legacy features. Asus showed off a few P45-based motherboards at the CeBit show a while back, but at the time, the boards weren't quite ready for the market. We have, however, gotten our hands on final production version of the Asus P5Q Deluxe, which should be available soon. Head on over to the site and check it out...
