Recently at Tech-Reviews, we have a reviewed a few budget coolers. So today we have gone to the other end of the spectrum, right in at the top, and we have ourselves a high end CPU cooler up for review. Let?s see whether this increase in cost leads to big benefits in the cooling department. Time to introduce the product itself; I give you the ASUS Silent Knight II, kindly sampled by QuietPC.

We've reviewed quite a few Mid-End coolers from ASUS, which almost always had decent technical properties. But the company also has a thoroughly developed High-End series. And the first such product to be reviewed now is Silent Knight II -- a promising premium cooler that offers an interesting combination of advanced design and attractive exterior.

In this review Frostytech is evaluating the ASUS Silent Knight II heatsink. The Silent Knight II is a copper heatsink vaguely reminiscent of the Zalman CNPS9700NT. Like most thermal solutions being introduced, it's compatible with Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad/Extreme and AMD Athlon64 processors. A 92mm PWM fan is set within the body of the heatsink and spins at 800-2300RPM, generating no more than 46 dBA in Frostytech's real world measurements. A pair of blue LEDs illuminate the translucent impeller blades, giving the Silent Knight II a nice visual effect.

Just as there are two basic types of people, the enthusiast peripheral market is made up of leaders and followers. Not content to mingle among the latter, Asus often leads the pack with innovative designs, and this week we're focusing exclusively on three very different CPU coolers from Asus. Today we get medieval with the Silent Knight II. Will the Silent Knight II prove but deadly against two modern day foes (heat and noise), or simply be found wanting? Pull up a spectator's chair as we get set to joust from within HL's cooling lab.

The most promising physical technological improvements have been, and still are, the implementation of heat pipes. Manufacturers have designed heat pipe specific CPU coolers using various numbers of pipes. Some makers design theirs with only a couple heat pipes while others seem to add as many as they can fit on a CPU cooler. Some look like CPU coolers and others look like engines with copper headers. While all these variations have their own appeal, ASUS has chosen to design coolers with a more isometric feel in their lineup. We've seen a few of their coolers here at VH before and they were always worthy of recommendations. We have a new one on hand that is actually an updated version of the original Silent Knight CPU Cooler. Today, the Silent Knight II CPU Cooler is on the work bench and looks quite promising.

Today we will be looking at the ASUS Silent Knight II, a revised version of the original Silent Knight. The cooler features an all copper design for the main components yet weighs only 610 grams. ASUS claims the Silent Knight II performs very well and is designed to dissipate heat loads that are associated with today's high performance quad-core processors. Today we will be testing the cooler in our Thermal Environment Control Chamber to see how it performs against other coolers in the same price range.

While Asus may not be the first to come to mind when it comes to CPU cooling to most people, my perception of Asus' thermal solution products greatly changed when I took a look at the Asus Arctic Square back in May. Last month, I received an Asus Silent Knight II cooler along with the incredible Asus P5E3-Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n motherboard based on the Intel X38 chipset. Meanwhile, the Asus Silent Knight II holds its own buzz excitement while the Asus X38 motherboard captured most of my attention -- I've been hearing quite a bit on the Silent Knight II's commendable performance for quite a while now. This is especially apparent when one of my friends asked me if I knew about "that Asus cooler that looks literally like a jet engine", while I replied back with "the Silent Knight II that's been in my storage for the last month or so?" A few days later, my curiosity regarding the Asus Silent Knight II overcame me as I finally opened it and decided to check out what the jet-engine-Silent-Knight-two (It may look like a jet engine, but hopefully it doesn't sound like one!) can bring about the overclocking community today.
