Crucial was among the first ever to introduce PCIe Gen5 NVME SSD drives, driving the race for the fastest possible NVME drive. The new Crucial T705 series sounds like a small revision compared with the already tested Crucial T700 series. PCIe 5.0 is the latest iteration of the PCIe data transfer interface standard, which offers bandwidth capabilities of 32GT/s, compared to Gen4’s bandwidth limit of 16GT/s.

The new Crucial T705 series is built around the Micron 232-layer TLC NAND, which according to the official specs is nearly two times faster than the previous Gen4 performance SSD with sequential read speeds up to 14,500MB/s. The Crucial T705 Gen5 SSD is designed for Intel 13th Gen and AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs and PCIe 5.0 desktops and motherboards. The Crucial T705 SSD takes full advantage of Microsoft® DirectStorage and GPU decompression functionality to render high-resolution textures up to 60% faster, load assets in seconds, and achieve up to 90% less CPU utilization to free up the system for multitasking purposes.

How is the T705 different from the T700?

According to Crucial, compared to the T700, the T705 delivers

    • 18% higher sequential reads
    • 8% higher sequential writes
    • 4% higher random reads
    • 20% higher random writes
  • Firmware optimization and improvements
  • Limited edition white heatsink

Micron has further improved reading/writing performance compared with the T700 series and unlocks the full potential of Gen5 technology with the Crucial T705 Gen5 SSD. It delivers speeds up to 14,500MB/s sequential reads and 12,700MB/s sequential writes. The product comes either barebone or features an aluminum and copper heatsink that dissipates heat without noisy fans or liquid cooling. Built for enthusiasts, gamers, creators, and professionals who need next-generation storage to stay ahead of the competition, the Crucial T705 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD is at the top of its class for high-performance gaming, photo, and video editing, running high-workload applications such as 3D CAD/CAM, and large data AI models. The Crucial T705 is compatible with Intel® Core 13-14th Gen and AMD Ryzen™ 7000 CPUs with Gen5 M.2 slots.

In July 2022, Micron launched the world's first 232-Layer 3D NAND, providing an unrivaled data input/output (I/O) speed of 2.4GB/s per second. Each layer is also denser (14.6Gb/mm² if you want the numbers), so higher capacity data storage can be created for a smaller physical space. Together, the number, density, size, and power efficiency of these layers have made Micron 232-layer memory today's go-to solution for data-centric workloads, including artificial intelligence, unstructured databases, real-time analytics, and cloud computing. Micron has collaborated with Phison, AMD, Intel, and motherboard manufacturers to enable the Gen5 ecosystem with Micron 232-layer 3D NAND. This same technology has brought Crucial T700 / T705 and other Gen5 SSDs to life. Through continued advancement and innovation on the NAND and technology, Crucial has successfully positioned the T705 at the forefront of performance.

Moreover, Crucial offers a T705 limited edition 2TB Gen5 SSD with a white heatsink. The limited edition T705 is only available in 2TB with a limited worldwide supply at selected partners. Users can find the full product specifications as follows:

  • Micron LPDDR4 DRAM, 1GB per 1TB of NAND flash
  • Sequential reads/writes up to 14,500/12,700MB/s
  • Random read/write speeds up to 1,550K/1,800K IOPs
  • Nearly 2x faster than the fastest PCIe Gen4 SSDs
  • Available in premium fan-less heatsink and non-heatsink options
  • Spacious capacity options: 1TB, 2TB, 4TB
  • Microsoft DirectStorage optimized with Phison I/O+ technology

- The Package/Overview

The Crucial T705 series can be found on Crucial's website, at various prices and capacities. For our tests we received the T705 version without any heatsink named The T700 version with a pre-installed heatsink has the CT2000T705SSD3 codename. The retail box is kinda smaller than the heatsink version. The retail price of the 2TB model is around 543.65 Euro, which sounds rather high compared with Gen4 drives and the MSRP as announced at the product launch. Due to recent changes in the memory modules supply chain, storage prices have exploded, in any case, check at the time of the reading your local prices, hopefully, users will see lower retail prices in the near future.

Inside the retail box, you won’t find much, just the NVME SSD drive and a quick printed guide. The product is inside a plastic shell that helps it survive transportation hazards.

It has all the typical dimensions for an M2 2280 NVME drive.

and at the back, you will find all the needed information as serial number and firmware revision.

- Installation

Not much to be said here, just get the drive and plug it into an empty NVMe slot. In some boards you have to change Bios settings to Storage: PCIe to get the drive recognized. Before we start our tests, we can get some info for the drive via the Crucial Storage Executive software. The Crucial T705 NVMEs were installed, and the barebone version came with preinstalled PACR5111 firmware revision.

Here is what the Crucial Storage Executive Software reported over the SMART information tab

Here is more information about the drive, it runs at PCIe Gen5 and supports NVME Express 2.0 protocol.

After formmating the 2TB NVME SSD you should expect around 1.81TB of free available space.
