A few months back we had looked at the Abit AW9D i975X motherboard, which was one of the first motherboards to come out of the Universal Abit camp. We had found this Intel flagship motherboard to be very competitive and offer a great deal of features even though it was not able to pack the equivalent punch of the legendary IC7-MAX3 or NF7-S v2.0. What we have on the table to look at today is the Abit NF-M2 nView. The NF-M2 nView is an AM2 motherboard that is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 with nForce 430 that offers both onboard DVI and VGA support along with 7.1 channel HD audio, Abit Silent OTES, and IEEE-1394a Firewire.

Scanning through ABIT's product lineup of late is like reading the menu at an enthusiasts restaurant - it's easy to see that ABIT is taking its new role seriously and producing performance oriented motherboards that may just rival the great LanParty series from DFI. Heat pipe based chipset cooling systems that operate silently, board level motherboard cooling fans, a peppering of LEDs for that special effect, outstanding voltage options in the BIOS and good overclocking ability - ABIT has crossed its i's and dotted its t's.

The abit AW9D-MAX motherboard is one of the best Intel 965P/975X motherboard that I have used to date. It's actually refreshing using a motherboard like the abit AW9D-MAX because everything just works out of the box. The NVIDIA 680i chipset has gotten a ton of attention in recent weeks, but at the same time it launched with numerous bugs that are just now starting to be taken care of via BIOS updates. The Intel 975 Express chipset has been on the market for over a year and has 99% of the bugs worked out, which is nice for those of us that want to set up their system with a stable overclock and be done.

Positives of this board include the integrated graphics, dual monitors without the need for an external graphics card and support for the AMD Live digital home. While gamers will want to steer away from any integrated graphics on the market today, the home theater enthusiast will love the fact that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD content are supported out of the box with the integrated video the GeForce 6150 with PureVideo.

We were able to overclock the system up to 4.35GHz rock solid! That's almost 1.7GHz overclock over stock. We achieved this feat by setting our multiplier to 10x while running our FSB at 435MHz.

One of those no-frill motherboards is the IL9 Pro. This is a motherboard based on the older but newly improved Intel 945 chipset, now labeled 945P. All boards offer support for Intel's current beast, the Core2 Duo and up to four gigs of ram. If you take into account just these two features, the board has room for upgradeability if you choose not to go the Conroe route just yet. Another advantage this board holds is that it is priced right for the budget minded person.

The abit IL9 Pro is an interesting mix of a board. The board is not an enthusiast board but is available on Newegg for under $85, matching or lower than the price of some available 945P boards. The IL9 Pro is a good choice for those wanting an inexpensive Crossfire solution, as this board is one of the few 945 boards that support Crossfire, albeit at a x16, x4 configuration.

Unfortunately Abit has gone for the "single PCI slot underneath the second PCI-Express x16 slot" again, which is confusing since Mr. Wendel has "influence on the design" of the board. Since he also endorses the Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty series, you'd think that he would make sure you can run high end SLI graphics cards which usually involve dual slot coolers, along with a PCI Fatal1ty X-Fi sound card.

For the fanboy loyal only to AMD, abit has released the Fatal1ty AN9 32X motherboard based on the Nvidia 590 SLI chipset. With support for AMD's newest chip socket, AM2 and DDR2, the Fatal1ty AN9 32X should be a great platform to keep you afloat until future releases by AMD regain the performance crown.

Abit has made a stable board with excellent features and looks and laid solid foundations for a an excellent enthusiasts motherboard. Many will not appreciate the expansion slot layout and the MCH voltage limited overclocking, despite the fact it overclocks well. For enthusiasts it has a disappointing BIOS despite tweaking options being intuitively laid out. Novice overclockers will have a blast but more hardcore enthusiasts should realistically look elsewhere.

Performance on the AB9 Pro board was excellent, typical of the 965 chipset series motherboards seen thus far. Overclocking on the board went well, with uGuru clocking the CPU up to 10% above default with no stability issues and the FSB clocking to 350MHz at maximum. Not the highest ever seen, but not bad either.

Intel is set shortly to announce their first Quad Core CPUs, according to their roadmaps. abit has assured me that the AW9D-MAX will support the Kentsfield CPUs. The AW9D-Max is an interesting mix of a 975X motherboard performance-wise, plus the special features you would expect from abit. I can heartily recommend this board for the enthusiast, as it offers excellent performance and Crossfire support right out of the box.

The AW9D-Max is Abit's second motherboard to date that supports the Core 2 Duo. The first was the AB9 which is based on the Intel P965 chipset. But their top dawg is the AW9D-Max. A full feature motherboard that sports a great color scheme as well as a host of other things that may make this the board to have.

ABIT has done a wonderful job with the Fatal1ty AN9 32X board. The board scored over 40 points on our features scoring system, with SLI, Firewire and other features making it one of the most feature-rich boards on the market. Performance was on a par with other boards on this chipset with the default clock speed, but the overclocking was very good on the board making it an excellent choice for people that want the absolute best.
