ABIT?s choice of power and cooling is a so-so affair. First off you have a 4 phase power regulation system to provide power to the CPU. While this is enough for the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme, the Pentium 4, Pentium D and Pentium Extreme and possibly the upcoming Core 2 Quad processors might find this a bit constricting when it comes to overclocking. ABIT has placed cooling on its Mosfets around the CPU as well as a new Silent OTES 2 cooling solution that covers the Northbridge, Southbridge and the additional voltage regulators. The cooling system is quite effective and looks very attractive but most importantly, it is silent.

Our Athlon64 3800+ X2 which is rated at 2GHz is running at almost 2.7GHz. With this great overclock, we turned our cheap Athlon64 X2 3800+ faster than an Athlon64 X2 5000+ chip. This feat was achieved out of the box.

First seen at CeBit, and then at Computex, these all digital speakers from Abit have had my appetite whet for too long. Finally they have arrived and much to the annoyance of everyone in the office upstairs, I gave them a thorough test.

I am really not sure how Abit managed to release this board with such serious BIOS issues. Thankfully, the latest BIOS fixes most of the serious problems, but it doesn't fix all of them - the KN9 SLI simply isn't bullet proof in its current state. This was further highlighted when we ran the bit-tech stress test.

It's no secret to most enthusiasts that ABIT has built a reputation of reliable performance products from entry level to extreme. Whether it's the budget minded or the hard core over clocker ABIT has provided the goods to get the job done with award winning product. With an all new hierarchy, management and leadership, ABIT has reached the next evolution of existance from the ground up. New for summer '06 is a full line up of motherboard products and we decided to check out the budget scene with the ABIT NF95 Socket 939 mainboard.

The Abit KN9 Ultra is backed by the NVIDIA MCP55 Ultra and supports IEEE-1394a, Dual Gigabit LAN, and all of the other Abit extras we are delighted to see back. The KN9 Ultra certainly looks like it may stack up well on paper, but let us see if Abit has truly returned to their famed past.

ABIT has done the job well with the KN9-SLI motherboard. The board retails on Newegg for $130 USD, the price point is excellent. The performance is below that of the nForce 590 SLI boards that we have tested, but those boards are generally the highest performing and have the advantage of LinkBoost technology, which boosts PCI Express frequency by up to 20%. In the overall the KN9 delivers adequate performance for the 570 line, but is not as feature filled as some of the other AM2 boards we have seen thus far.

The AW8D board is an excellent example of an Intel 975X board with one rather big exception. Total lack of support for the new Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo CPUs means that those wanting this motherboard are limited to the current 965 and below CPUs. As more and more Core 2 CPUs reach the market, replacing the 9xx and 8xx series, this means future upgrading is limited.

ABIT's back and it's getting ready to give DFI, ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte a serious run for the money. It's newest flagship Athlon64 motherboard is the ABIT AN8 32X, based upon the nForce4 SLI x16 chipset (nVidia C51D and CK804 SLI). As you know, the nForce4 SLI x16 chipset allows two nVIDIA PCI Express videocards to run in SLI mode with each card receiving the full 16 PCI Express lanes. There is no bandwidth sharing between SLI videocards with this particular nForce chipset...

ABIT has created a very solid and overclockable motherboard in the AN8 32X - it competes well on price with its competitors and performs about how we would expect it to perform. It's also remarkably stable too. The board overclocks well, and the tweaking options are reasonably comprehensive, but we feel that it could be even better with more tweaking options available to the enthusiast...

The AN8 32X is a very average effort from Abit. It doesn't have a long list of onboard features or a killer layout and it didn't overclock as well as we would've liked it to. This board seems to be targeted towards the non-enthusiast who want an SLI X16 setup which is not something that Abit is reputed for. Now that Abit as a corporation seems to be out of troubled waters, lets hope that their next attempt is what we're used to seeing from them...

Since I am soon upgrading to a 6800 graphics card, I thought that I would write a review of my current card, the ABIT RX700 PRO 128 PCIE. I have always thought that this card was brilliant, and hopefully if you read on I hope you will see why. This card was developed by ATI under the chipset name of RV410. It's targeted at the mid range market, which is good news because it means that this card doesn't cost a fortune! For just a little over £50 you can have a card that is perfect for gaming and doing everyday computer based tasks...
