When it comes to high performance memory, Kingston has a name to keep up in the business. We already took some of the memory kits from Corsair, Team Group and OCZ for a spin, but Kingston was noticeably absent. About time we set this right, and we do this today by looking at two of their products: the PC6400CL4 and PC8500CL5, both 2Gb memory kits. Let's see how they stack up against some fierce competition.

So, what is ReadyBoost you ask? It acts as an extension of Vista's SuperFetch feature, which loads frequently used files and programs into the system memory so that they load significantly faster than if they loaded directly from the hard drive. As a result Vista is far better at utilising large memory configurations in excess of 2GB, and power users will certainly reap the benefits.

I was very excited to see just how well the Kingston HyperX PC2-9600 DDR2 memory kit would overclock on the 680i board, and as you can see above it did not disappoint as we were able to get another 100MHz out of it by reaching 1300MHz!! Unfortunately it was the NVIDIA 680i SLI motherboard that was not stable enough to complete testing at this awesome speed, not our Kingston memory. We were able to boot up and get the screen shot above...

Kingston continues to deliver a wide range of USB Flash drives to protect user data. The DataTraveler Secure Privacy Edition helps ensure data integrity under extreme conditions, without sacrificing performance. With hardware encryption and a complex password protocol the device is currently the most secure USB drive on the market. And with read and write speeds of up to 24MB/s and 10MB/s, respectively, it also offers relatively speedy performance (faster drives are available). Available in storage capacities of up to 4GB (from £31 to £176) and supplied with a 5-year warranty and full customer support, business users should certainly take a look.

The advent of the DVD and the ever increasing capacity of hard drives means our files have got larger over time. Not much more than a decade ago you'd have been unlikely to be in possession of a file that wouldn't fit on a floppy disk, in fact a great many games shipped on a single floppy. Today it almost seems pointless trying to make proper use of any portable storage medium that can't carry at least as much as a CD does.

Overall, the HyperX PC2-6400D2LLK2 2GB kit is a decent DDR2-800 kit. It is surely a performance DDR2 module which operates at 400MHz with 4-4-4-12 latencies. As far as overclocking goes, we have seen better kits. Maxing out at 500MHz, we believe this is the highest we have achieved on any HyperX DDR2 kit tested to date. Although we had to loosen to CL5, the higher memory frequency makes up for the higher latencies. When testing at rated speed and voltage, our system was not stable. We later found out that the modules wanted 2.1V instead of the rated 2.0V. Considering that most DDR2 motherboards support up to 2.3V, this may not be a big issue but we expected the modules to run flawlessly at 2.0V.

The Kingston 256MB microSD Card may not have the capacity of larger flash memory cards, but it still performed very well. It did well in our tests, showing very good read performance and a write performance of approximately 32X. All in a tiny card the size of a fingernail. That's pretty surprising because it's mainly targeted at mobile phones, which are not devices that particularly scream high performance! Still, if you need a fast microSD card for your mobile phone, this card should fit the bill...
