Blu-ray is one small step closer to becoming mainstream, thanks to the publicity generated by Sony's PlayStation 3. The next step is to get the enthusiasts onboard and Sony intends to do that with its new BWU-100A Blu-ray writer. Here's our experience with this drive.

I won't go into too much detail about the chassis as I've already covered it in my Sony Vaio VGN-SZ2XP review, but I will go over the most salient points. The first is the very thin display. This is due to Sony using an LED backlight. This enables the screen to be noticeably thinner than conventional laptop displays that use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp technology. It also means that the laptop tapers from the back to the front making it easier to hold, while the wedge shape is easier on the eye.

TVs don't have to be big to be HD Ready. Sure, the biggest part of the HDTV market is inevitably based on screen sizes of 32in or more. But there's still a healthy market out there for folk looking for a small TV for a study or kid's bedroom where it might well need to be able to play host to such 'second room' HD delights as a PC or an Xbox 360 games console. Or maybe even an HD DVD/Blu-ray player, if you're really lucky.

I was disappointed to find that a similar tool hadn't been released by Sony for the S203F, but a quick search of Google revealed a clone of MP3FM, but with added features. Not only that, but it works with this model. It's called voidmp3fm and it's available from drvoid.com. It is worth mentioning that it is not officially supported by Sony, but I've had no problems with it yet.

Is the system, available in 20GB ($499, sans WiFi and a built-in combination Memory Stick product lineup, Compact Flash and SD/MMC card reader) or $599 chrome-trimmed wireless-ready 60GB hard drive models, worth the hefty asking price, the highest since early-'90s systems like CDi and 3DO? Can Sony, who's recently cut back North American November 17th launch date ship projections to just 400,000 units (with some analysts predicting actual distribution of half this number or fewer machines), manage to avoid aggravating a soon-to-be-device-deprived buying public while still keeping up with the competition? And, of course, with so much power and hardware combined in a single unit catered to the highest-end luxury users, is there even a point to upgrading?

The T10 is pretty light at 162g, but still slightly heavier than the Canon Ixus 850 IS. That said, the Sony is definitely slimmer with dimensions of 89.7 x 54.9 x 20.6mm compared with 89.5 x 58 x 25.1mm for the Ixus. In fact it's the shallow depth of the T10 that makes it particularly attractive and allows it to slip pretty unobtrusively into your pocket.

This week sees the release of Blu-ray, the first of the next generation high definition optical discs formats to hit the UK. The format is most closely associated with Sony, but the first dedicated drive is actually available from Samsung. Sony is not ignoring the launch of its own format however. We've already looked at the impressive Vaio VGN-AR21S notebook that features an integrated Blu-ray drive and now Sony has put another Blu-ray notebook drive into it's latest desktop Media Center system - the VGX-XL202. This is essentially the same as the VGX-XL201 but with the addition of the Blu-ray drive, for which you'll pay an extra £800 ? a hefty additional sum.

We at TrustedReviews are, of necessity, a rather cynical bunch. And so as we set about reviewing a new piece of electronics, we?re generally pretty unmoved by any hype that might surround it, no matter how cutting edge it?s meant to be. But today, as Sony?s KDL-46X2000 sits quietly on our test benches, we really are experiencing a little tingle of anticipation. In fact, scratch that: we?re itching all over to find out what it?s capable of.

The Sony SZ is arguably one of the most versatile laptops on the market. This laptop is packed full of powerful features without compromising on weight, function, or style. The strikingly vibrant and sharp 13.3-inch widescreen with XBRITE is one of best displays I?ve seen. Thanks to the relatively new LED backlight technology, colors appear richer and more evenly & brightly lit. The screen offers sufficient desktop real estate for a portable machine as well. Having a hybrid graphics system is great since users have can switch between graphics chips to conserver battery life, but I don?t see it making a huge impact on giving you more battery juice. However, the discrete Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 offers much improved graphics performance.
