And so to the router itself, which is an unassuming slab of silver/grey plastic with three removable aerials at the rear. Alas, Gigabit Ethernet isn't on the menu as you get a standard quartet of switched Fast Ethernet ports which could cause a potential bottleneck between high-speed wireless clients and LAN systems. The RJ-45 WAN port means you'll need a cable or ADSL broadband modem with a suitable connection but USR does offer a version with an integral ADSL2/2+ modem.

The router is an imposing slab of silver plastic which provides the obligatory quad of switched Fast Ethernet ports along with an integral ADSL2+ modem. USR has never been tempted to play with MIMO so the wireless access point is endowed with a single aerial, whilst a USB port is provided for sharing a printer over the network.

USRobotics' MAXg Wireless ADSL2+ Networking Kit (£43.49 ex. VAT) includes everything you need to connect to and share your ADSL Internet service in your small office. It also brings the benefits of high-performance wireless networking to your business. The Wireless MAXg ADSL2+ Gateway integrates the company's latest ADSL and MAXg wireless technologies for a 'complete' small-business broadband network. MAXg technology delivers a claimed 50% range improvement over standard 802.11g and provides wireless speeds of up to 125Mbps, although actual performance will vary depending on operating environment and distance between networked devices. In reality, you should expect little more than a 15% increase, which is still good.

At around £55 they're an absolute steal for a great set of desktop speakers that look good too. Obviously, if you're prepared to spend a lot more money, you will find better sounding speakers utilising multiple channels, but at this price the T20s represent superb value. They're more convenient than 2.1 systems, with even less wiring to deal with, and in many cases, will sound better too.

There are plenty of Skype accessories hitting the market that let you use your home phone for free or dirt-cheap Skype Out phone calls. The USRobotics USB Telephone Adapter (USR9620) is different. It's the only adapter intelligent enough to forward Skype calls to your mobile phone for when you're not near a PC. You can even make Skype calls from your mobile phone to avoid long-distance charges. The device connects to both your PC for Internet calling and a standard telephone line, and there's a call waiting feature for both Skype and standard phone calls.

The USR9630 Cordless Phone from USRobotics is an interesting proposition. The silver device looks like a regular household DECT phone, but connects to both a traditional phone line and an available USB port on a Windows PC running Skype. Thus, it allows you to make and receive Skype calls in addition to regular telephone calls (low-cost calls with non-Skype users is available via SkypeIn and SkypeOut services). It also allows up to four cordless handsets to be connected to the same telephone line.

U.S. Robotics' USB Internet Speakerphone (USR9610) lets you make Skype calls hands-free. With decent echo cancellation technology, hardware volume and microphone mute buttons (small blue/red LED indicates the status of the microphone), and full-duplex operation, the USR9610 (£28.99) works just like a traditional speakerphone, only without the costs of a long distance call. At the rear of the unit are two connectors for attaching the supplied USB cable and an optional pair of headphones for private conversations...

If you work nearly as much as we do, you'll know that you need both hands on the keyboard at any given time, and can't be fooled to take the time to put on a clunky headset every time you want to take a Skype call. Rather than fiddle with a stand-alone mic and speaker setup and pray there's no echo, a dedicated speakerphone may just do the trick. USRobotics was kind enough to send us their USB Internet Speakerphone that happens to be Skype-Certified, so let's get down to business with the review...
