Time is money in the SMB and Corporate Enterprise sector, and anything that can cost less while saving time is sure to be a popular commodity. The Synology Cube Station CS407 4-Bay SATA Gigabit NAS is a gigabit network appliace which offers more features and functionality than most Windows Server 2003 R2 domain controllers... for less than the price of the Server Operating System! We've just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate the build quality, advanced features, and performance of the Synology Cube Station CS407. This do-it-yourself NAS device and server comes configured "bare-bones", ready for installation of up to four SATA hard disks with RAID 0, 1 and 5 capabilities. In addition to its compact form-factor and clean lines, Synology's CS407 provides product differentiation through support for a multitude of cross-platform features like UPnP MultiMedia support, iTunes server functionality, a Web Server with PHP and MySQL support and even an integrated photo management system called PhotoStation2 that has a decidedly "flickr-like" look and feel to it. Anyone in the market for a feature rich network attached storage device should check this article out?

The market for external storage has really started to heat up over the last couple of years. As greater capacities are becoming commonplace, people are finding even more stuff to store. As I have written in the past, the more space a person has, the more they will find to store in it, in the real world as well as the digital one. Some people can buy that 500 GB, 750 or 1 TB drive and slap it in their computer, but others want more complicated solutions. And the more you have to store, the more you have to lose. It is this increased awareness of data protection as well as storage needs which have given the NAS (network attached storage) market a boost. Light years ahead of the external hard drive, network attached storage brings with it a huge feature set, from remote accessibility, to automatic backups, and hardware failsafe systems. What is even more amazing is that these feats don't require a second mortgage. Today's NAS contender is the Cube Station CS407 NAS, from a newer company (founded in 2000) called Synology.

The Cube Station CS-407e builds on the successes of its predecessor and now offers an even better personal network storage solution. General performance is average at best but for the price you won't find many other desktop NAS appliances offering this level of capacity and features.
