Since launch, the availability of 7800 GTX cards at retail has been almost as impressive as the performance of the hardware itself. A contributing factor to the early healthy supply was that the board manufacturers stuck to the reference design. Not surprising really, considering that it's costly to make changes to an already functional design. However, the 7800 GTX has been out for some weeks now and of the two cards on review here, one of them does differ from the reference design...

If you are absolutely sure you want the GeForce 7800 GTX, make sure you have nothing less than a high-end Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 system. Anything less will just waste the GeForce 7800 GTX's potential. With the GeForce 7800 GTX, you can be almost certain that you can play any game, even with 4xAA and 16xAF enabled! Just leave those settings alone and get busy with your games! As expected, the GeForce 7800 GTX runs pretty hot under heavy load, but the fan's noise level is quite acceptable...

This is the fastest graphics card ever to grace the TrustedReviews lab. The GeForce 7800 GTX is a totally awesome chipset, and the slightly overclocked XFX retail board pushed the envelope even further. If you've got a lot of money, buy one of these cards. If you've got even more money buy two - you won't regret it.

Overall, the GeForce 7800 GTX simply rules, but it's just not to the extent that most enthusiasts were hoping to gain. As we have mentioned, it's best that we reserve the G70 architecture's capabilities until a new class of game engines come along to really showcase the next generation graphics power. Hopefully then, we would see even better results as compared to its predecessors. For now, what the GeForce 7800 GTX brings to the current crop of games is the ability to use the highest resolutions and the maximum detail settings and enjoy gaming with the very best performance and image quality possible...

Whilst the performance increase for GeForce 7800 GTX over NVIDIA's previous high end is evident, at least where the applications is sufficiently graphics limited to show it, its good to see that NVIDIA have focused on the power side of things as well such that the increased in performance (and die size) isn't drawing as much power as 6800 Ultra at high load situations, and is able to scale down better during 2D operations. These power alterations have inevitably lead to NVIDIA only requiring single slot cooling as well which may make it easier to fit 7800 GTX is a wider range of systems, especially those with small form factors...
