Everyone that is a gamer knows that having the freedom to game whenever you want is severely limited to who you are living with or next to. Other than some special situations, both will actively object to you disemboweling your adversary with a gattlin gun at 3am in the morning with you 5.1 speaker system at gaming volume. Because of that simple problem, gamers rely on a good set of gaming headphones to span those times where our gaming audio is not appreciated by others.

Playing games over the internet like Counterstrike or Team Fortress 2 without a headset is really frustrating. It's faster to issue commands and ask for help by speaking into a microphone than by typing on the keyboard - which usually will get you killed (virtually, we mean). That's why the serious gamer always confides in a good headset while playing. Razer, a company known for their gaming mice, is releasing a headset pompously dubbed as a "gaming communicator", the Piranha. It's an entry-level model when compared to the Barracuda headset, which has a bigger size and more sound features. Let's proceed to our field test of the Piranha.

Here at Driver Heaven we use quite a lot of Razer hardware both on our work PC's and test systems. The hardware ranges from mice to headphones and the majority of the components are very good, the DeathAdder mouse has yet to be beaten as far as we are concerned. There are however some Razer products which have not been as good, the Tarantula keyboard for example just does not feel right so when receiving new review samples from Razer we always wonder which area of quality the items will fall into. Today we have two new products from them to review, the Piranha Gaming Communicator and Destructor Gaming Mat.

Recently Razer sent over two of their latest products for review, and the first one I'll be taking a look at today is the Piranha Gaming Communicator. Razer touts the Piranha as having true to life audio quality with superior clarity and bass, a noise-filtering microphone and ergonomic and adjustable earphones.

We haven't looked at a new Razer product since February of 2007 when reviewing the DeathAdder, but with products from the Copperhead to the Mantis, we have been impressed with their exceptional quality. The Razer Barracuda AC-1 did initially have some problems with Linux, but those have since been worked out with the ALSA Snd-Oxygen driver. Today up on the review block is a new Razer audio product and that is the Piranha Gaming Communicator, which is a headset designed for gamers with true-to-life audio quality and a noise-filtering microphone.

Most of us wouldn't think of letting a piranha anywhere near our noggin, but this isn't the first time Razer's gone against conventional wisdom. In fact, Razer owes its very existence to this type of thinking. Once considered a niche market, Razer gambled on the future of competitive gaming and arguably helped take the little known segment and cast it into the mainstream limelight. It started with a line of ultra sensitive mice, and today Razer's product line runs the gamut from gaming keyboards to a growing line of audio solutions. Today we're focusing on the latter with Razer's new Piranha Gaming Communicator, or in layman's terms, headset with microphone. Hoping to strike a balance between comfort and all-around performance, does Razer's Piranha pack enough bite, or is this one fish we're better off throwing back?

RAZER is a company that develops and manufactures gaming peripherals that can give gamers the competitive edge. They specialize in headsets, keyboards and mice to give gamers ultimate control over their competitors but at the same time making it more comfortable for them to endure long hours of fragging or raiding. Let's see how this philosphy translates to the RAZER Piranha!

The Razer Piranha is a worthy follow-up to the Razer Barracuda in some regards, though not in others. While the sound performance is clearly above-average at worst and the design is interesting to look at, my experience with the Piranhas turned out to be almost as painful as an encounter with some Pygocentrus nattereri. The other insurmountable problem to get over with the Piranhas is the staggering cost of the headset - £53.39 in the UK or $69.99 in the US! At those prices, I'd personally demand a little bit more than the Piranha is offering. When it comes down it, the Piranha is a half-decent headset with excellent bark, but awful bite and if you're wondering why I'm using a dog-based metaphor instead of a fish-based one then I'm afraid I can't really offer an adequate explanation - maybe something fishy is going on...

The Piranha is Razer's newest effort to conquer the budget gaming headset market. It features a noise canceling microphone and a lot of other neat features that add to the value of the product which is sold at a mere $79.99.

While attending a local LAN party, I've noticed one brand of gaming gear that dominates among the hard-core: and that brand is Razer. They make gaming mice, keyboards, and headsets with features that PC gamers are looking for with a high degree of quality and a decent price point. A good gaming headset is a necessity when playing online, not only to hear the critical audio cues that help keep you alive, but to communicate with your teammates for coordination (and taunt your victims, of course).
