ATI has made a notable comeback over the past year with enticing GPU releases that have been able to match and sometimes surpass Nvidia's offerings in terms of performance, power consumption and value. As things stand today, the GeForce GTX 280 is the fastest single GPU graphics card available, while the standard Radeon HD 4870 is not too far behind it. Yet the Radeon costs less than $300, while the GTX 280 is selling for roughly $450, giving AMD some generous pricing headroom to play with.

The Sapphire 4870 X2 is a fine example of the card and is available at a very competitive price that right now sets it apart from the competition. The included bundle is solid, and inclusions like 3DMark Vantage are certainly very welcome, giving new owners that much needed score to help them justify the massive wedge of cash they've just spent on playing Crysis a bit faster. With the weight of Sapphire behind it, it shouldn't prove too tricky to get hold of either, and while the two year warranty isn't anything to shout about, it should provide you enough piece of mind until it's time to upgrade again. If you're in the market for a 4870 X2, this should do nicely - but it's still a lot of money.

Palit's card isn't available online as of yet, but as ATI's card just launched this past Tuesday, it should hit retail stores at a price of $549. At this price point it is the highest priced card for gaming enthusiasts but you get the performance of two HD4870s on a single card, making it the fastest single card on the market. When NVIDIA launched their GeForce GTX 280 card it was the fastest, but it wasn't so fast that two of the competition chips couldn't beat it. This has caused NVIDIA to drastically lower the prices of their GTX280 and GTX260 cards to reflect the performance and price you would expect. Competition is a good thing, as you get better performance, more features and lower prices because of it. This is a Gamers Gold card as it is the top of its class for a single GPU solution.

Today I will be looking at ATI's most recent release, the Radeon HD 4870 X2. I can't quite imagine the performance capacity of a pair of HD 4850s, so I really have no idea what to expect from twin 4870s, complete with two full gigs of DDR5 memory. This will be my first ATI-branded Radeon card, which will make things even more interesting. Will the 4870 X2 offer the ultimate 3D graphics experience? Read on to see!

First of all, it was planned to oppose GeForce GTX 280 with CrossFire configurations based on two separate HD 4850 or HD 4870 cards. Then the company presented a dual-GPU solution on a single PCB, the RADEON HD 4870 X2. We've already published its preview with several tests. Now it's time for a sterling article with theoretical data, synthetic tests, and an expanded set of games.

AMD has done a great job with the Radeon HD 4870 X2 and it has snatched the crown for the fastest graphics card in the world back from Nvidia in the process. Like we've said though, it's not all rosy and there are drawbacks associated with buying a Radeon HD 4870 X2, just like there are with any other multi-GPU configuration. As long as you're prepared to accept them, then the Radeon HD 4870 X2 is well worth considering if you've got that kind of cash to throw around.

There is nothing to balk about with this release, even the price is not overtly overboard from an out of gate newcomer X2 series card as the 4870 X2 will even out price wise at about $500.00 US, and that's not too out of line for what the card offers and represents. Most cards lately from either ATI or NVIDIA have been overpriced, usually in the over $600.00 range and that really puts the card out of the reach of most people's budgets. $500.00 for the top of the line card when it hits the streets is reasonable in today's PC market where top of the line CPUs are $1200.00, motherboards $400.00 and 4GB ofDDR3 memory are $300.00 as these are the major components that make up your gaming computer. Palit and ATI together have a solid winning victory in the new Radeon HD 4870 X2 card, it a serious Editor's Choice product for anyone who is serious about their game.

When we reviewed the HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 earlier, we spoke of the R700 card that has yet to arrive. Well, we are pleased to say that it is finally in our labs. Consisting of two RV770 GPUs on a single PCB, we see if it has what it takes to oust NVIDIA's fearsome GTX 280 as the fastest single graphics card.

While details on AMD's high-end ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics card began surfacing last month, today this dual-GPU graphics card has formally launched and will begin shipping to retailers. The good news this time around is that this graphics card will actually be something worth looking at under Linux now that there's the needed CrossFire support on the horizon. We're not yet permitted to publish the Linux CrossFire benchmarks, but today we have a few pieces of information to share about the Radeon HD 4870 X2 on Linux.
