Canon's Digital IXUS range is arguable more concerned with style over substance, but frankly it's not an issue for those who want to capture images quickly and easily. Every Digital IXUS we've ever used (we're still using the Digital IXUS 950 IS) has been a dream to use and produced excellent shots with minimal fuss. The Digital IXUS 90 IS is no different, and although there's no ground-breaking photographic innovation the build quality is second to none and image quality (both stills and videos) is well above par - images are crisp and colours are accurate, at least at low ISO modes. The only big disappointment is that Canon skimps on memory, providing an almost good for nothing 32MB card. Still, flash memory is cheap these days and you can pick up a good 2GB card for under £10.

When it comes to photography, fun should always be top on the agenda and Canon does it again by injecting the joyous element into its Canon Selphy ES2 photo printer.

There's no mistaking the EOS 40D for one of the zillions of point-and-shoots or entry-level D-SLRs like the Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XT.

Although Canon's HR10 continues the high video-quality theme of its HV20 and HG10, it's not quite in the same league. Aside from the lack of enthusiast features, it's let down by the DVD recording format itself. The limited storage has always been an issue with optical disc-recording camcorders, even standard definition ones. But with AVCHD, you don't even get to pop the discs into your DVD player to watch them straight away. So, although the HR10 has quite a reasonable street price, we'd recommend waiting for a Blu-ray model if a disc-based camcorder is what you're after.

Canon leads the digital camera market, and the IXUS 860 IS shows why. It is fast, looks great and is a pleasure to use. You'd be hard pushed to find a better pocket compact camera this Christmas.

The Canon PowerShot A720 IS is an ideal camera for anyone who wants a bit more creative control than most pocket compacts can provide, and would be an excellent camera for anyone who wants to learn more about photography. Build quality, design and performance are all excellent, image quality is superb and the range of features is hard to match at the price.

Perhaps envious of the success of Panasonic's TZ2 and TZ3 cameras, Canon has announced a new series of medium-zoom "family cameras", starting with this, the 8MP, 10x zoom SX100 IS. With a range of manual and automatic features, it is a camera designed to have as wide an appeal as possible.

Canon has been on a bit of a winning streak lately. Not content with nearly half of the world's digital SLR sales, it has recently updated virtually its entire compact camera range with outstanding new models, including this long-awaited replacement for the excellent and extremely popular S3 IS.

The SD850 IS looks just a shade better than the zillions of silver-bodied aim-and-forget digicams for sale.
