Our friends at ECS are back with a performance board for the more budget conscious users. Based on NVIDIA's 650i chipset, the ECS NF650iSLIT-A offers much of the performance of its 680i brothers but with fewer tweaking features, smaller bundle, and of course, a lower price. Let's check it out!

The ECS NF650iSLIT-A motherboard supports every Socket 775 processor on a 533/800/1066 MHZ FSB, from the Celeron D to the Pentium 4/D/XE series, and of course the Core 2 Duo/Quad processors. It will also do 133MHz FSB through overclocking, so that potentially brings the Intel Penryn core into the fold as well. Onboard goodies include dual PCI Express slots for SLI, a Gigabit network connection, 7.1 channel High Definition audio, four Serial ATA II ports, two IDE channels and the usual collection of USB jacks. The ECS NF650iSLIT-A is built with the nVidia nForce 650i Northbridge (C55) and nForce 430 (MCP51) Southbridge.

NF650iSLIT-A from ECS is based on the latest nVidia mainstream chipset for the Intel platform, nForce 650i, being a motherboard targeted to the average user that wants SLI and support for the forthcoming Core 2 Duo CPUs based on the new 1,333 MHz external bus. Let's take a look on the features and performance of this model from ECS.

Elitegroup Computer Systems is known for their array of products from desktop computers to graphics cards and motherboards. At hand today we have their NF650iSLIT-A motherboard, which is powered by NVIDIA's nForce 650i Chipset and caters toward the computer enthusiast crowd, but can it really deliver?

The 650i is a clipped down version of NVIDIA's current flagship chipset, the 680i. The 650i is aimed to give the masses the performance of the new architecture, while at the same time not breaking the bank. ECS was kind enough to send over one of their new motherboards that features the 650i chipset, the NF650iSLIT-A (V1.0).

While INTEL continues to release quality chipset after quality chipset (with their G33 and G35 chipsets already showing up for pre-order), those who favor the NVIDIA silicon and the benefits they offer (SLI anyone?) are fairly limited. Those wanting to match a Core 2 Duo processor with SLI were forced to toss down premium money on high end 680i motherboards, or settle for the older NVIDIA 570 or 590 SLI mobos, which, while no slouches, don't feature 1333FSB support or other newer features found on NVIDIA's 680i chipset. Enter the NVIDIA 650i chipsets.

NVIDIA has launched two new chipsets in the last few weeks, the nForce 680i LT SLI chipset, which has many of the features of the 680i chipset minus the higher memory clocking and a third PCI Express x16 slot for other uses and the nForce 650 Ultra chipset which was launched this week which lacks SLI technology for $99. This board is fairly well rounded and offers adequate performance and features for its price range.

Today we are looking at nVidia's mainstream SLI product designed to keep the costs down but give the customer something that is worth the money. Today we are looking at the nVidia nForce 650i SLI chipset in the form of the version 1.0 NF650iSLIT-A motherboard from ECS. Its advantage is that it is cheaper than more expensive 680i SLI and 680i SLI LT motherboards but does that make it a substandard motherboard? Let's read on and check out the onboard features, performance and overclocking and then try and make a decision.

ECS put together a decent board in the form of the NF650iSLIT-A. It is a board that performs wonderfully at stock settings. As you could see in our testing, the lack of being able to keep tRCD settings for the memory really only hurt performance in a few of our benchmarks. Overall, the board hung with its competition, which is quite a statement since we have it up against the likes of chipsets like the Intel 975x and Nvidia 680i, as well as a proven winner in the Asus 650i board. In fact, it beat out these boards in some of our tests, proving that ECS and this chipset are both to be commended.
