Samsung Launches First Curved Smartphone

Samsung Electronics has launched a handset with a curved display screen. The 'Galaxy Round' martphone will feature a 5.7-inch display.

The announcement comes a couple of days after LG announced mass production of the first flexible display.

Available in Korea from 10 October, the Galaxy Round features a 5.7 inch Super AMOLED screen and weighs in at 154g. Samsung said the curved screen display would help consumers use some of the features on the phone, including those that enable users to check information such as date, time and missed calls when home screen is off, with more ease. Users can also change music tracks on their phone, even while its display is off. When playing music, tapping the left or right of the device skips back and forward between tracks.

The 1.9 millimeter thick device is running an MSM8974 SoC clocked at 2.3 GHz. It also has 3GB of RAM, a 5.7" 1080p OLED display, 13MP rear shooter, and a 2800 mAH battery. It runs Android 4.3, so it'll be compatible with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

The Galaxy Round will be released only in South Korea for now. SK Telecom will start selling the handset Thursday for 1.1 million won ($1,003) without a service contract.
