MWC: Sony Introduces Xperia Z2 And M2 Smartphones, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Wearable Technology

Sony has been busy in Barcelona on Monday with the announcements of the waterproof Xperia Z2 Tablet, the Xperia M2 4G LTE smartphone, the Xperia Z2 flagship waterproof smartphone with 4K recording and its SmartWear experience with the SmartBand and Lifelog applications.

Sony says that the new Xperia Z2 Tablet is the world’s slimmest (only 6.4mm) and lightest (only 426g for Wi-Fi model and 439g for LTE/3G model) waterproof tablet. It features a 10.1" Full HD TRILUMINOS Display for mobile matched with Sony’s new Live Colour LED technology plus Sony’s X-Reality for mobile intelligent engine for natural color reproduction.

High sound quality is maintained with Sony’s Front Surround audio technology and a Digital Noise Cancelling technology that reduces ambient noise by up to 98% when paired with the MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling headset.

The tablet also comes with the "What’s New" app on its home screen, which helps you discover new and recommended movies, music, games and apps.

"WALKMAN" and Movies applications provide access to songs on the "WALKMAN" app through Music Unlimited and thousands of movies and TV series on the Movies app through Video Unlimited from Sony Entertainment Network.

The Album app with PlayMemories Online makes it easy to upload photos and videos across Sony devices.

Sony is also offering 6 blockbuster movies from Sony Pictures including Captain Phillips, 30 days free trial from the Music Unlimited service and a range of PlayStation Mobile games.

Under the hood, the Xperia Z2 Tablet features the integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.3 GHz processor quad-core Krait CPU plus the latest Adreno 330 GPU.

Xperia Z2 Tablet can also spend less time charging with the integrated Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology, which enables devices to charge up to 75 percent faster than devices without the fast charging technology. It is powered by a 6000mAh lithium polymer battery, which provides up to 10 hours of uninterrupted multimedia usage and more than 100 hours music playback without having to recharge your battery.

The tablet also features a 8.1MP camera with Exmor RS for mobile. The "Superior Auto" mode combines "Scene Recognition" with image processing technology such as HDR and noise reduction to automatically capture the moment with the optimal settings. It also comes with a 2.2MP front-facing HD chat camera.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet will launch globally from March 2014.

The Xperia Z2 is a Sony's latest flagship smartphone. Launching globally in March 2014, the 8.2 mm slim device features a 20.7 megapixel camera matched with 1/2.3-type Exmor RS for mobile CMOS image sensor, Sony’s G Lens and intelligent BIONZ for mobile image processing engine. With new enhanced video mode, you can now capture memories in in 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels/30p) at four times the detail of Full HD. Plus, SteadyShot image stabilisation technology ensures your footage will stay smooth even if you are walking.

The compact STM10 Stereo Microphone offers high quality stereo audio recording.

Sony is also offering a range of Xperia camera apps. In addition to Info-eye, Social live and Timeshift burst, Xperia Z2 also comes pre-loaded with new Xperia camera apps for both photo and video.

  • - Timeshift video: The new Timeshift video mode lets you shoot in 120 frames per second and select scenes to slow the playback speed for slow motion effects even underwater.
  • Creative effect: Use a range of new creative effects for your photos and videos. Available in real-time for video, these adjustments enhance your clips with a range of effects such as colours, image trails, mirror and motion effects.
  • Background defocus: This new camera app simulates a shallow depth of field. Capture two photos at different focus settings and blend together the different depths, leading to a blurred out background.
  • AR effect: Now available for video recording, have some fun with your photos and videos with new augmented reality animations, including sound effects for video.
  • Vine: Create short looping videos in a simple way for your friends and family to see – all from your camera’s viewfinder. Plus, using the dedicated camera button, you can capture Vine videos underwater as well.

In addition to these fun and useful pre-loaded Xperia camera applications, there’s a range of extra apps including Wikitude Places, Evernote, VI Sports and more.

The dust-resistant and waterproof (IP55 & IP58) device features a 5.2" Full HD TRILUMINOS display for mobile with Live Colour LED and X-Reality for mobile.

The Xperia Z2 also offers high sound quality with stereo speaker output and Sony’s digital noise cancelling technology.

The smartphone is armed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.3 GHz quad-core Krait CPUs and 4G LTE. It also includes a 3200 mAh battery plus Sony’s Battery STAMINA Mode.

Sony's Xperia M2 is a mid-range 4G LTE smartphone. It offers media apps for entertainment, online and offline with Sony Entertainment Network. Through the Music Unlimited service, Xperia M2 users can access million songs for free for 30 days, while the Video Unlimited service offers instant movie blockbusters on a smartphone. A range of PlayStation Mobile games will also be included.

The Xperia M2 is equipped with an 8MP camera with Exmor RS for mobile comes armed with Autoscene Recognition and HDR. It has a .8" qHD display and combines the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.2 GHz quad-core CPUs and 4G LTE for fast performance and a 2300mAh battery with STAMINA Mode 3.0.

Sony is also offering a dual-SIM variant of the M2, the Xperia M2dual. Users can set up both SIM cards independently with custom ring tones and choose between SIMs before making calls or sending texts, whilst Sony’s dual SIM management technology means that users can keep both SIMs active and never miss a call.

Xperia M2 will launch globally from April 2014.

Sony's SmartBand SWR10 is the company's next step into smart wearables, focusing on "Lifelogging," "flexible style" and "life tools." SmartBand and Lifelog applications will be available worldwide from March 2014.

Sony says its new Lifelog application "binds the SmartWear Experience together, enabling you to discover your past, enjoy your present and helping inspire your future." Together with SmartBand, the Android app enables you to capture places visited, music listened to, games played, books read and presents it a visual interface.

You can see how active you were, where you went, what pictures you took and how you have been communicating with your world. Lifelog will also help you set activity goals, monitor your progress and make recommendations to help inform future decisions.

SmartBand’s core module is a 24/7 wearable device; waterproof (rated IP582) despite its exposed Micro-USB port.

The wearable technology in SmartBand SWR10 talks to Lifelog app and your Android smartphone via Bluetooth and NFC. When out of range (up to 10m) from the smartphone, a vibrating alert will prompt you to let you know. SmartBand will also measure your sleep cycle, to wake up you at the optimum time. And, once calls, messages, Likes or tweets are received, SmartBand will vibrate to notify.

It can also be used to play, pause and skip tracks in WALKMAN app by pressing the button, and tapping the band.

SmartBand SWR10 and Lifelog application will be available worldwide from March 2014. Initially available in Black, a variety of colour styles will be available after launch – including a special limited edition to celebrate the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
