Samsung, LG Plan To Release QD TVs Next Year

Samsung, LG Plan To Release QD TVs Next Year

Consumer Electronics Oct 16,2014 0

Korean Samsung And LG plan to introduce quantum dot TVs (QD TV) next year, which are said to be a more cost effective alternative to OLED TVs. The quantum dot LCD TVs offer a high color range and picture quality compareble to OLED screens, but at a far lower cost. QD TV is a variant of LCD TV, meaning it needs no additional large-scale investment to build new manufacturing lines.

Speaking to the Korea Times, a Samsing official confirmed the company's plans for a QD TV next year.

The QD technology was considered a risky venture because of the use of cadmium, a regulated substance due to environmental concerns. However, Samsung
worked with Dow Chemical to use cadmium-free QD electronic applications developed by the American chemical company.

The company expects the cadmium-free QD TV to help expand its global market share.

Samsung's rival LG Electronics is also mulling producing QDTVs, although it will consinue offering OLED TV models or the high-end market.

"We plan to add non-cadmium QD TVs from next year to diversify our product lineup," said an executive at LG's TV business division.

LG Electronics is collaborating with LG Chem and Dow Chemical on cadmium-free QD materials. It plans to release its first cadmium-free QD TV at next January's International Consumer Electronics Show (ICES) in Las Vegas.
