The latest 9800 GX2 incarnation to make its way into the labs comes from GIGABYTE and carries with it all the standard goodies that we expect out of the 9800 GX2. The latest 9 series of NVIDIA cards have impressed us, but like we've said all along they haven't offered the revolutionary jump that we thought the 9 series would offer. With the standard clocks and cooler there isn't going to be a whole lot out of the ordinary, but we will check out the bundle and box to see if there is anything that gets our tails wagging.

Time has come for the long-awaited announcement of the dual-GPU card NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2, which unites the power of two G92 GPUs into a single solution. Unlike AMD, with its multi-GPU CrossFire solutions for the top price range, NVIDIA does not seem to give up the single-GPU future for its graphics cards. The card we shall review today should outperform AMD RADEON HD 3870 X2, which was the fastest card since this January.

The GeForce 9800 GX2 combines the two GeForce 9800 GPUs in a single graphics solution, which offers 256 processor cores and a frame buffer of 1 GB (512 MB per GPU). It also allows a user to take advantage of the second-generation Quad SLI technology.

If the Radeon HD 3870 X2 is essentially two Radeon HD 3870 GPUs put together on the same PCB, then it is safe to say that the new GeForce 9800 GX2 is no different, with two GeForce 8800 GTS 512 GPUs slapped together on a single PCB. What ATI should find scary about this is that the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 is significantly faster than the Radeon HD 3870, and so that gives us a good starting point to start analyzing the GeForce 9800 GX2...

Quad GPUs - its the stuff that a gamers dreams were made of a couple of years back. However, with the release of dual GPUs on a single graphics card, both AMD and nVidia have managed to make it happen. In fact, nVidia has had some previous experience with their 7950GX2 and today, they transfer that technology to the recently released game killer- the 9800 GX2.

NVIDIA has done a great job with Quad-SLI and with some driver improvements it should only get better. The XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards running in a quad-SLI showed increased performance in every application we tested versus a single GeForce 9800 GX2, which is something that can not be said about the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 as they had some driver issues on Tomb Raider: Anniversary. We almost didn't include Tomb Raider: Anniversary in our testing, but our two store-bought DVD versions of Bioshock say they have been installed too many times, so this game was a last minute addition...

Last week we brought you coverage of the new nForce 790i Ultra SLI chipset along with the 9800 GX2. Within that article we would have liked to include benchmarks of the GX2 in an SLI Quad configuration but due to a rather bizarre decision by Nvidia they asked all partners to withhold Quad performance until today. Members of the public could have bought two of these cards and used Quad Sli themselves, so the decision was for all intents and purposes, utterly ridiculous. Anyway, today we can tell you how Quad SLI performs but we want to do more than that so we will be taking our first look at 3-Way SLI using three 8800 Ultras and finally we will be testing in a fully ESA compatible system... case, cooling... the works. If you have money to burn, this is where you find out just how fast you can go.

It feels weird to have done four articles on the 9800 GX2 without having actually had a look at a single retail card yet. The first retail card to come out of the gates comes in the form of a ZOTAC offering. With the latest WHQL driver in hand, the 174.53, we're going to see how the GX2 holds up against the direct competition, the HD 3870 X2 from AMD.

Today we are checking out the latest NVIDIA based video card, and it is one seriously high-end performer. The new 9800 GX2 uses a pair of 9800 GPUs and delivers record breaking performance. This is usually the point where I say that I couldn?t run Crysis at over medium settings. Today for the first time ever I was able to run Crysis at 1920 x 1200, all settings on high and with 2xAA at smooth and playable frame rates. I used Fraps to record frame rate data from the initial beach insertion until the battle with the first enemies.

Overall then, if you're after the fastest single card solution on the market, the GeForce 9800 GX2 is it and if you don't have an nForce motherboard, it's currently the only way to enable SLI technology on other motherboards and could quite possibly be the fastest graphics solution in that situation as well, given some of the performance differences between the GeForce 9800 GX2 and the Radeon HD 3870 X2.

After introducing the 9000 series with a mid-range graphics card, nVidia gives us a taste of its power with their first high-end 9000 series graphics card. Like AMD's 3870X2, the GeForce 9800 GX2 is a dual GPU solution with 1GB frame buffer divided equally amongst the two GPUs. Unlike AMD, nVidia already has some experience with their dual GPU based graphics card- the old 7950GX2 which was certainly a breakthrough product and much liked at our labs. Lets find out what the new GeForce 9800 GX2 brings to the table.
