The G33 Express chipset is in no danger of being confused with INTEL's P35 or X38 chipsets when it comes to all out performance, but its features certainly aren't lacking. These include, among other things, INTEL's GMA3100 integrated graphics, which includes INTEL's "Clear Video Technology", HDMI support, and HD Audio, making it a good base for your next HTPC project. Today, HL puts ECS' G33T-M2M-ATX board through its paces, and tells you whether its worth considering for your next HTPC project.

The ECS G33T-M2 motherboard is based on Intel's news integrated graphics chipset, the G33 Express, and like the Intel P35 Express makes an awesome duo when paired with a dual core Intel Core 2 Duo processor... or a new 1333MHz FSB CPU for that matter. This board is also interesting because it's the first platform to pass through the PCSTATS test labs without an IDE slot.

ECS AMD690GM-M2 is a socket AM2 motherboard with on-board video based on the latest chipset from AMD/ATI, AMD 690G, also known by its codename RS690. This is the first chipset coming from the collaboration between AMD and ATI, after AMD bought ATI. We were very curious to compare its performance to the previous on-board video solution from ATI, Radeon Xpress 1100, to its main competitors, GeForce 6100 and GeForce 7025 from nVidia, and also to cheap add-in video cards, like GeForce 6200. Let's take a look on the performance and features of ECS AMD690GM-M2.

To this end, new chipsets have come to the air of the Core 2 desktop platform. First there was the P965, the best chipset Intel has released in ages. It overclocked extremely well and supported DDR2-800 memory technology. Now with DDR-3 hitting the shelves, Intel has its next generation of hybrid chipsets out which are designed to bridge the DDR-2 to DDR-3 platform gap (similar to how i915 supported both DDR and DDR-2 memory on a single chip, depending on what you want to use). We have looked at the mainstream version of the bridge chipset, the P35 has proven to be a very powerful performer. Today we are looking at the first of the value chipsets with Intel's latest integrated graphics core, the G33. ECS has provided us with their latest G33 motherboard to test.

Usually, budget and performance don't go together, however ECS has somehow pulled it off gracefully over the last couple of years with the introduction of their EXTREME series of motherboards. Today, we look at their nVidia 680i SLI solution for INTEL CPU's. Let's see how it does!

f you're a novice at computer hardware, you may want to have a more experienced friend handy when setting up the ECS AMD690GM-M2 motherboard. This MicroATX board is not as user friendly as we'd like it, but then again with a price point of ~$70 CDN you really can't complain. The Hardware Installation Guide while brief is pretty detailed and the User's Guide is also very well written. From hardware installation to BIOS and driver setup, ECS has this part of its game pretty well down.

The ECS NF650iSLIT-A motherboard supports every Socket 775 processor on a 533/800/1066 MHZ FSB, from the Celeron D to the Pentium 4/D/XE series, and of course the Core 2 Duo/Quad processors. It will also do 133MHz FSB through overclocking, so that potentially brings the Intel Penryn core into the fold as well. Onboard goodies include dual PCI Express slots for SLI, a Gigabit network connection, 7.1 channel High Definition audio, four Serial ATA II ports, two IDE channels and the usual collection of USB jacks. The ECS NF650iSLIT-A is built with the nVidia nForce 650i Northbridge (C55) and nForce 430 (MCP51) Southbridge.

PN2 SLI2+ Extreme from ECS is based on the latest nVidia chipset for the Intel platform, nForce 680i, being a very high-end motherboard targeted to the latest and future Core 2 CPUs. Its main features include support to DDR2 memories up to 1,200 MHz, the new 1,333 MHz external bus (FSB) and an out-of-ordinary overclocking support. Nvidia has now a new approach and some motherboards based on their chipsets are now labeled as "designed by nVidia", meaning that the motherboard was designed and manufactured by nVidia, not by the brand that is selling it. This is the case with this motherboard. Let's see how this model branded by ECS performs.

With a retail price of $71 CDN ($65 USD, 32 GBP), you really can't go wrong with the ECS AMD690GM-M2 motherboard. Based around the AMD 690G chipset, the motherboard is compatible with all Socket AM2 processors and with the recent price drops, you can potentially build a dual core workstation or multimedia machine for less than $500 CDN!

The 650i is a clipped down version of NVIDIA's current flagship chipset, the 680i. The 650i is aimed to give the masses the performance of the new architecture, while at the same time not breaking the bank. ECS was kind enough to send over one of their new motherboards that features the 650i chipset, the NF650iSLIT-A (V1.0).

NVIDIA waited until last month to release its new midrange GPUs. First off the production line were the GeForce 8600 GT and GTS SKUs, promising the fullest feature-set the low side of £150. ECS, naturally, wanted in on the action and has launched its own GeForce 8600 GTS: overclocked.

While INTEL continues to release quality chipset after quality chipset (with their G33 and G35 chipsets already showing up for pre-order), those who favor the NVIDIA silicon and the benefits they offer (SLI anyone?) are fairly limited. Those wanting to match a Core 2 Duo processor with SLI were forced to toss down premium money on high end 680i motherboards, or settle for the older NVIDIA 570 or 590 SLI mobos, which, while no slouches, don't feature 1333FSB support or other newer features found on NVIDIA's 680i chipset. Enter the NVIDIA 650i chipsets.
