It is the only 64-bit processor designed for notebook applications! "This processor marks the latest addition to our family of high-performance, 64-bit computing products and is the only 64-bit processor designed for notebook applications," said AMD spokesperson Jo Albers.

Seeking to cash in on strong demand for notebook PCs and halt the momentum established by rival Intel in the mobile-computing space, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) unveiled the Mobile Athlon 64 processor family. The new set of chips is aimed at the latest high-performance portable computers. Based on the company's AMD64 technology, the new processors can handle both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. In addition, they include integrated virus protection and support for wireless networking.

Performance Play
"This processor marks the latest addition to our family of high-performance, 64-bit computing products and is the only 64-bit processor designed for notebook applications," said company spokesperson Jo Albers.

Albers said the Mobile Athlon 64 technology will offer more flexibility to laptop vendors trying to differentiate themselves from the pack. The chips are ideal for gaming and content-creation applications on full-sized mobile computers, she added.

Mobile Market
Among those committed to the new chip line are Fujitsu Siemens, which will use the new processors in the high-performance AMILO A1667G notebook to be launched next month throughout Europe, and VoodooPC, which will launch a new gaming machine based on Mobile Athlon 64 technology.

Focusing on the mobile-computing market makes sense, given that notebook PC sales are soaring, although AMD faces stiff competition from Intel's popular Centrino and Pentium M products that now dominate the market.

While desktop sales remain steady, notebook adoption in the U.S. continues to accelerate, according to IDC, especially among students and those looking to take advantage of wireless capabilities.
