Panasonic to To Move Cellphone Production Outside Japan
Panasonic will shift its entire cellphone production
overseas, as the company tries to enter the global
markets.
The company is set to relocate domestic production, which
accounts for about half of its output, to Beijing and
Malaysia as early as this summer, the Nikei reported on
Sunday.
Panasonic will begin selling a new Android model in Europe this month and later expand to the United States and Asia. The phone will feature an ultra-slim D-shaped design and a slim bezel with a Quarter HD (QHD) 4.3-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) screen. It will also be waterproof and dustproof, Panasonic said.
The Japanese company plans to triple its handset sales in Japan and overseas to 15 million units in fiscal 2015. Of that figure, it expects to sell 9 million units in foreign markets.
Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., which is responsible for Japanese output, will keep its plant in Shizuoka Prefecture for aftersales services and testing for a certain period, even after shifting production overseas.
