The 30th RWPPI General Meeting is held

The 30th RWPPI General Meeting was held at 2004.04.15 Info Source Multi Media Ltd. (Hong Kong), Infosmart Technology Ltd. (Hong Kong) join as new members, CeBIT Report, New Recorder introduction by Mitsubishi, Dual Layer DVD-RW Technology introduction.

The 30th RWPPI General Meeting was held on April 15, 2005 at the Pioneer Corporation in Meguro. The meeting opened with the speech by Mr. Koki Aizawa - Representative. He said: "Out of the many DVD Recorders introduced this Spring, many of the major domestic manufacturers also announced using the DVD-RW & R recording formats, realizing the feeling of a closer step to a defacto standard. JVC also introduced the world's first Dual Layer DVD-RW, for possibilities in wider applications, where RWPPI will hopes to also work in unison to enhance such possibilities and developments with this new technology" ending his speech

Two new companies as Info Source Multi Media Ltd. (Hong Kong) and Infosmart Technology Ltd. (Hong Kong) joined on, added with Thai Media Industries Co., Ltd. (Thailand) from our last meeting, giving vivid introduction presentations of their companies.

Next, the CeBIT exhibit report of Hanover, Germany and the RDVDC Joint Round-Robin-Test seminar and press conference held last March were presented. Furthermore, the overview of our first show in plan for this fiscal year in Shanghai, China from May 11th, and Round-Robin-Test seminar plan at COMPUTEX TAIPEI were also presented.

In continuation, the chairman of the Joint Round-Robin-Test (JRT), Mr. Utsumi of Pioneer Corporation gave the update report of the most recent progress and overview explanation of RWPPI's Round-Robin-Test and RDVDC's CWG for CeBIT.

After that, the current recommendation of the "RW Compatible" indication on not only RW Playback devices, but expansion of use to DVD-RW's VR recordable/playback devices and PC application software were suggested for consideration and approved.

Also for this March, the annual "RWPPI Members Questionnaire" was conducted and summarized by Ongen Publishing Co., Ltd., in which opinions and suggestions were reported in detail.

This was then followed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation's introduction of their new DVD "Rakureko" Recorder by Mr. Shimamoto and Mr. Hatanaka. The new product has time record, playback functions, greatly improving search features for recorded programs for large family use, and to match with large panel displays. Live demonstration with detail captured the members interested.

Next, Mr. Matsumoto of JVC took the stand to explain about the Dual Layer DVD-RW disc technology, which was already recently released to the press. Currently through the DVD Forum, they are earnestly considering to develop this standard, where we may expect to attain a detailed announcement in the near future.

As this was our 30th time to hold the General Meeting, we had a special guest speech. From the photo industry, we had the Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., Eastman Kodak Company, and Konica Minolta Photo Imaging, Inc. jointly promoting the possibilities in expanding the common standard PASS (Picture Archiving and Sharing Standard) make their introduction by Mr. Otsuka of Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. Without the use of a PC and for simple enjoyment of digital photos, the necessity for the infrastructure and media, for large panel images with high-speed search and playback, and unifying interoperability with existing standards were explained. Aim for the standard system of preservation and retrieval of digital images from any digital device or storage medium. Licensing for this new standard are expected to commence from this summer of 2005. As influence to DVD-R and DVD-RW discs are also related to this standard, many of the members listened with great interest.

For the wrap up of the meeting, the special lecture by Dr. Koichi Ogawa of the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Economics, Manufacturing Management Research Center was made. His topic was on "Business Strategy and Standardization of Optical Storage Product." From his "product manufacturing theory" based on the concept of Product Architecture, he explained about the pros and cons of the Power of Open Architecture and Closed Architecture with comparisons, verifying his theory from examples of DVD trends and the future of optical discs. The domestic members as well as overseas members had great interest in his analysis and future prospects in the business. He mentioned that the RWPPI activities such as efforts for improvements in usability through "Members Questionnaire" and "Round-Robin-Test" are very good, where effects for benefits on a worldwide basis will probably reach 1 billion people. For future growth of popular hit products, he requested the balance of standardization and profit to be made, ending the meeting safely.
