Panasonic claims that three of its patents related to DVD has been violated by Taiwanese CMC Magnetics, bringing the case to the United States District Court in California. According to Panasonic, CMC violated three patents related to the structure of a DVD disc, the processing of the recorded data as well and the protection film material used on the blank discs.

The company claims that ever since Q3 2004, it has been negotiating in good faith with CMC to license these particular patents. Furthermore, it argues that a licence covering Panasonic's essential DVD patents was available to the CMC through a patent pool from the DVD6C consortia, since Q3 2003.

Panasonic is requesting the prohibition of the sales of the specific DVD media.
