First U3 USB Devices Launch at DEMOfall

First U3 USB Devices Launch at DEMOfall

Optical Storage Sep 20,2005 0

Several manufacturers on Monday unveiled the first USB drives based upon the U3 standard, a method that enables users to carry, store and launch personal applications directly from a USB flash drive without installation. U3 smart drives host U3 smart applications, computer settings and data allowing people to carry their "personal workspace" with them and to access it on other PCs.

On stage at tomorrow?s DEMOfall technology conference held at the Hyatt Hotel in Huntington Beach, California. U3 Chief Executive Officer Kate Purmal will demonstrate "benefits" of the U3 platform.

Appart from the obvious functionality of the U3 devices, which allows people to carry a software application on a USB flash drive, the U3 applications can run off any U3 device without installation on the host computer. And virtually any application can become a U3 smart mobile application with minimal developer effort and without application coding or recoding.

According to the U3.com website, any U3 smart application will run on any U3 smart device from any manufacturer. In addition, the U3 platform is designed to leave no trace of the user?s data or application usage on the host computer after the smart drive is removed. The U3 platform also supports the creation of security solutions to protect the privacy and security of user data and applications.

Users can set applications to run as soon as the drive is inserted in the host computer. And when the drive is pulled out, even without following the proper remove hardware process, the application exits the system leaving no trace.

Well, reading the various press releases someone might think that the U3 devices are not offering any innovating features, since most of the features mentioned above are currently supported by the usual USB flash drives. Although the concept looks promising, we have to wait until more information will be available. For details visit www.u3.com.

The U3 LLC group is backed by M-Systems and SanDisk Corp. At DEMOfall, Kingston showcases its U3 DataTraveler is $42 for the 512MB version and $80 for the 1GB. SanDisk Cruzer Micro smart drives will be available from October for $55 for the 512MB and $100 for the 1GB. Verbatim's Store 'n' Go U3 Smart Drive Verbatim's 1GB Store 'n' Go U3 Smart Drive will be available mid-October at a projected street price of $99.00.
