France Attacks Renew Encryption Debate

France Attacks Renew Encryption Debate

Enterprise & IT Nov 16,2015 0

The recent attacks in Paris have sparked the debate over whether technology companies should let governments have access to daily communications, even if they are encrypted. In the meantime, media have speculated that Sony’s PlayStation 4 video game consoles could have been used to coordinate the attacks. Although there is not evidence that the Paris extremists relied on encrypted communications to plan the shooting and bombing attacks that left 129 dead on Friday, the widespread use of encryption worries members of the intelligence and law enforcement communities. Some are now using the occasion of the Paris attacks to once again argue for restrictions on encryption, saying it hampers their ability to track and disrupt plots like this one.

End-to-end encryption technology is now widely used in many standard message systems, including Apple's iMessage and Facebook's WhatsApp.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat, said she’s asked Silicon Valley companies to help law enforcement and intelligence agencies access communications that have been encrypted if terrorists are using the tools to plan attacks.

Companies such as Apple, Google and Yahoo incorporated stronger encryption in their products after revelations of U.S. spying were exposed by Edward Snowden in 2013.

But intelligence officials have argued that technology companies should build "backdoors" into their encryption systems that would allow investigators into otherwise locked-up devices during investigations.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has said that terrorists are using encryption to communicate -- on everything from apps to even gaming systems.

Last week, Belgium’s deputy prime minister said that "the most difficult communication between these terrorists is via PlayStation 4."
Speaking at Politico even in Brussels, Jam Jambon added that "it’s very, very difficult for our services -- not only Belgian services but international services-- to decrypt the communication that is done via PlayStation 4."

Players using PS4 can communicate via direct messages or by voice.
