Japan Display Showcases 4.5-inch OLED Panel At FPD

Japan Display Showcases 4.5-inch OLED Panel At FPD

Consumer Electronics Nov 1,2012 0

Japan Display has developed a 4.5-inch HD OLED panel with a 326ppi resolution. Designed for future smartphones, the panel will enter mass production in in fiscal 2014. The new OLED panel is on display at JDI's booth at FPD International 2012, which runs from Oct 31 to Nov 2, 2012, in Yokohama, Japan.

The panel features four color filters (CFs) using white OLED devices and red, green, blue and white colors. The structure of the OLED device is a top-emission type that extracts light from the side opposite to the TFT board.

The pixel count, pixel pitch and resolution of the panel are 1,280 x 720, 78μm and 326ppi, respectively. The panel's maximum screen luminance with an all-white signal is 400-500cd/m2 and its contrast ratio is higher than 10,000:1. It also has a 90% or higher color gamut on NTSC standards, and JDI plans to further cover the 100% color gamut before bringing the panel in volume production.

Japan Display, a company created by Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi last April, is also showcasing LCD modules for tablets and smartphones as well as color reflective LCDs at FPD International.

These include a 5.0-inch module for smartphones with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and pixel density of 438ppi and a contrast ratio of 2000:1; a 7.0-inch module with high WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600 pixels) and a pixel density of 431ppi, contrast ratio of 2000:1. JDI also developed two versions of a 7.03-inch display. The high-reflective version has an XGA resolution (1024 x x768,) a high reflectance of 40%, a 5% NTSC ratio, a 30:1 contrast ratio and consumes 3mW, when displaying still images. The second 'high color gamut' version has the same size, a slightly lower resolution (1024 x 576) a lower reflectance (28%) and most importantly, a higher NTSC ratio of 36%.
