JVC to launch ProHD

JVC to launch ProHD

Consumer Electronics Mar 30,2005 0

JVC is to launch a new pro-level 3CCD camcorder at the NAB show in Las Vegas , which runs from April 16-21. The GY-HD100 uses an expanded version of the HDV format called ProHD based around the same MPEG-2 compression and miniDV tapes as HDV but adding support for 24p, timecode and dual media recording. Alongside the camcorder, JVC will also show the BR-HD50E deck.

Both the camcorder and deck work with footage in 720p format (1,280-x-720), though traditional DV is also supported. JVC has said that future models in the ProHD range will capture and record in progressive and interlaced 1,920-x-1,080 modes. 24fps footage is supported, as is Direct To Edit disk recording. This enables footage to be captured directly into the native formats of popular video editing software (and concurrently to tape if the user wishes). This uses technology developed by Focus Enhancements, as seen in JVC's DR-DV5000 product for its DV5000 camcorder.

Full details of the HD100 will be revealed at the show. However, for supplied photography it is clear that the HD100 is smaller than the mock-up shown by JVC at the IBC show last year, which is based around the shell of the DV5000. It offers an interchangeable lens mount (with a Fujinon lens shown in the pictures) and dual XLR audio inputs on the right hand side. On the left side are a standard set of controls including gain, white balance, shutter and ND filter. The HD50E deck will support 720p, DV and even DVCAM capture. Pricing is likely to be announced at the NAB show.
