New Input Display Combining Two Input Capabilities: Finger Touch and Optic Pen

New Input Display Combining Two Input Capabilities: Finger Touch and Optic Pen

Consumer Electronics Oct 17,2006 0

Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TMD) has developed a new poly-silicon (LTPS) liquid crystal display (LCD) that allows users to select between two input capabilities: by directly touching an icon or button on the LCD screen with a finger, or by direct handwriting onto the LCD screen with an optic pen. TMD has been strategically allocating resources to develop the System On Glass (SOG) technology taking advantage of the inherent characteristics of LTPS technology. In April 2003, TMD succeeded in developing the world's first LCD that directly captured images from the display screen (an Input Display). Since then, TMD has introduced other products that incorporate such technology into the market, including an Input Display with touch panel function in December, 2004 and an Input Display with optic pen input function in September, 2005.

The new development has realized a multi-functional Input Display which offers more sophisticated finger-touch input functions, including slide- and touchpad-input options, achieved through further refinement of TMD?s know-how in LTPS LCD-specific technologies, such as: enhanced response characteristics of high-speed driving circuits and photo sensors, improved accuracy of signal processing, and optic pen input function.

The newly developed prototype is based on SOG technology much like its predecessor Input Displays in that it integrates photo sensor and signal processing functions onto the glass surface of the LCD, and thus, unlike existing displays, there is no need for additional incorporation of any touch panel or other components in or on the display. The company expects that the new technology will find application in mobile equipment, where there is high expectation and need for further thinness, compactness, weight reduction, and reliability.

The new prototype will be exhibited at TMD?s booth at FPD International 2006, a leading international exhibition and forum on flat panel displays, held at Pacific Convention Plaza (PACIFICO) Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, from October 18 to 20, 2006.

Features

Screen size (diagonal): 7.1cm (2.8-inch)
Number of pixels: 400 (H) x RGB x 240 (V)
