Protesters Call For An End to NSA Surveillance
About 5,000 people attend a Saturday rally in Washington asking the U.S. Congress reveal the full extent of the NSA's spying programs.
The protesters called on the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama to end mass data collection and surveillance by the NSA.
The crowd held signs thanking Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor whose leaks to news organizations exposed mass surveillance and data collection programs at the spy agency. Others held signs with the text of the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protests residents against unreasonable searches and seizures.
During the rally, members of the groups Fight for the Future and Restore the Fourth delivered a petition, with more than 583.535 signatures, calling on Congress to investigate NSA surveillance programs.
StopWatching.us is a coalition of more than 100 public advocacy organizations and companies from across the political spectrum. We came together in June 2013 to demand the U.S. Congress investigate the full extent of the NSA's spying programs. Go here to read our letter to U.S. Congress demanding accountability and reform.
The rally, organized by the StopWatching.us coalition, was held on the anniversary of the date former U.S. President George W. Bush signed the controversial USA Patriot Act.
