Quantenna Develops 10G Wi-Fi

Enterprise & IT Apr 14,2014 0

Quantenna is developing the first 10G Wi-Fi chipset for a new generation of access points in the home, the enterprise and public spaces. While Broadcom made a big splash in 2013 with the first 802.11ac chipsets under the 5G branding, Quantenna is taking the lead with 10G. By taking advantages of MU-MIMO and putting in support for 8 spatial streams, Quantenna hopes to deliver speeds of up to 10 Gbps .Quantenna's massive 8x8 MIMO promises reduced interference while handling multiple devices simultaneously.

"Quantenna's 8x8 architecture with adaptive beamforming demonstrates that the 'massive MIMO' promise of significantly higher throughput, robustness, and reduced interference can be realized in practice," said Andrea Goldsmith, Stephen Harris Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. "This architecture will also significantly enhance the capabilities of MU-MIMO, allowing it to support interference-free transmission to many more devices simultaneously. These technology advances will transform the landscape of applications and devices that Wi-Fi can support. As we move into an era of exponentially-growing video usage and the Internet of Things, the 8x8 architecture and MU-MIMO technologies will become essential in all high-performance Wi-Fi devices."

ASUS is using Quantenna's 802.11ac chipset to build a consumer router. Texas Instruments is also incorporating Quantenna technology into its reference platform for enterprise and pico small cell LTE base stations. STMicro is building Quantenna Wi-Fi into a wide range of System-on-Chip (SOC) offerings.

Massive MIMO is the industry term for an advanced radio utilizing an array of many antennas to increase capacity through multi-user MIMO processing.

Quantenna plans to complement its 4x4 offerings by making the first 10G Wi-Fi chipsets available in 2015, including support for MIMO configurations up to 8x8.
