Android O Brings Better Battery Life and Notifications

Android O Brings Better Battery Life and Notifications

Smartphones Mar 22,2017 0

Google unveiled the next generation of its mobile software. The preview version of Android O is currently available to developers before Google officially releases it.

The new OS will bring better battery-life features, more control over notifications, and a picture-in-picture mode for phones and tablets.

Android O introduces notification channels to provide a unified system to help users manage notifications. Now users will be able to have more control over notifications within an app. They'll also be able to group together different notifications.

Google will also limit what apps can do while they are launched on your phone but not actively being used. For example, now apps won't be able to do as much with location updates while they're running in the background -- which can be a big battery suck.

Google is also updating Android's WebView, a ervice that lets developers take advantage of browser technology in their apps. The update makes it harder for a maliciously coded app to steal your personal information.

Other new Android O features include a picture-in-picture view on phones and tablets so you can keep watching a video while using other apps. The update will also allow for better autofill options, which populate text boxes automatically with things like your name and address so you don't have to type them in repeatedly.

Android O supports new Java Language APIs, including the new java.time API introduced with the latest version of Java 8. Optimization for the new runtimes is also included for better performance and stability in apps designed for Android O

Android on Chromebooks means we need a better way to use all the features of an app through the keyboard and mouse. Android O focuses on building a better model for arrow and tab key navigation. This is one of those things that are both better and easier for developers and end users.

Google will detail the features in more depth at during its annual software developer conference, Google I/O, in May.

The Developer Image for the OS is going live today for the Pixel, Nexus 5X and 6P.
