Samsung Display in Talks With Apple to Supply OLED Panels iPads and Macbooks
Samsung Display has been reportedly in taks with Apple to supply OLEDs for the upcoming high-end Macbook and iPad models.
Apple, which is already using Samsung Display's OLEDs for the iPhone X model,
is considering the adoption of OLED displays in its high-end "pro" models among the laptops and tablet PC product lines. The new 16-inch 'MacBook Pro' with OLED display will be added to the laptop lineup. The existing 11-inch 'iPad Pro' LCD display will also be replaced by an OLED.
According to sources in South Korea, Samsung Display presented to Apple rigid OLEDs applied with thin-film cap (TFE) processes. The thin-film cap is a method applied to flexible OLEDs.
Conventional rigid OLEDs a featuring an extra layer of glass placed on their substrate glass to protect the emissive layer.
Rigid OLEDs applied with a thin-film cap process do not require an in-cap glass. As a result, they are thinner compared to LCDs.
Samsung Display has been promoting its OLED technology beyong smartphones and recently held a Technology Seminar at its offices in San Jose, California.
The company has started mass production of a 15.6-inch UHD (ultra-high definition) OLED panel with HDR support for the notebook/laptop market. The new panel features a brightness level ranging from 0.0005 to 600 nits, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 120,000:1. The new display also provides a spectrum of 3.4 million colors (double that of similarly sized LCD panels), with colors meeting the DCI (Digital Cinema initiative)-P3 standard, the specification best suited for video streaming.
