Samsung Display Develops Under Panel Sensor, Fingerprint On Display AMOLEDs

Samsung Display is developing new technologies for AMOLED screens that will find their way to upcoming smartphones: Fingerprint on Display, Under Panel Sensor, Haptic on Display and Sound on Display

The company showcased its latest OLED technology for smartphones this week at the '2018 Samsung OLED Forum' held in Shenzhen, China. The event was held under the theme of '5G era and OLED' and Samsung showcased its technical expertise in the OLED technology, with attendees to include more than 20 Chinese smartphone companies, namely Oppo, Bibo, Huawei, XiaoMi, Lenovo, ZTE and more.

Among the interesting display technologies showcased were the Fingerprint on Display (FoD) and Sound on Display (SoD) technologies.

FoD was expected to appear in Samsung's smartphones earlier, and similar technologies are already features in some Chinese smartphones. Obviously, the fingerprint reader (sensor) is placed below the smartphone's screen.

Sound on Display (SoD) is coming to smartphones, after debuting to Samsung's TVs. SoD generates sound solely through vibrations, though it's presently unclear how the technology fares against traditional dual-stereo speakers in terms of quality. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus are expected to be announced in early 2019, and they could feature SoD.

Haptic on Display (HoD) is actually bringing buttons on the smartphone's screen, mainly for use during gameplay.

The Under Panel Sensor (UPS) technology is very interesting, as it would actually allow Samsung remove any top bezel or notch used to host a smartphone's sensors and selfie cams. This would pave the way for the design of true all-screen phones.
