AMD's Microprocessors Suitable for UMPCs

AMD would not confirm that the rumor that it is contemplating the Ultra-mobile PC market. When contacted by the CDRinfo team on whether it was planning to enter the UMPC sector with its Turion64 and Geode mobile processors, AMD Global Communications, Jo Albers, replied that the company would not comment on speculation.

With the launch of Microsoft's Origami operating system the Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs) may rise on the portable PC market. It will depend on whether technical issues such as excessive power use can be resolved.

Microsoft has already announced that its Origami devices will be built around Celeron-M, Pentium-M and VIA C7-M processors from Intel. Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer and China?s Founder have reached agreements with the software maker and are each scheduling volume shipments by the second quarter of 2006.

AMD's line of microprocessors could be suitable for mobile technologies that need a low power consumption. The AMD Alchemy processors "are ideally suited for low-power, high-performance applications such as PDAs, Web tablets, portable and wired Internet access devices and gateways.The AMD Alchemy Au1200 processor is a low-power, high-performance processor solution for Personal Media Player (PMP), automotive and Digital Media Adapter (DMA) applications." explained Mr. Alber.

The Geode mobile processor is also mobile-ready that is enery efficient. "The AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor delivers longer battery life and enables small form-factor designs for products such as thin clients, interactive set-top boxes, single-board computers, Personal Access Devices (PADs), mobile Internet and entertainment."

As for the AMD Turion 64 mobile technology, it is mostly optimized for thin and light notebook PCs with a long battery life.
