ARM 2011 Roadmap Includes New Kingfisher, Cygnet Cores

ARM Holdings plcpresented new CPU designs in its roadmap for 2011 during a presentation of the company's fourth quarter and full year financial results. According to the presentation, ARM's"Kingfisher" and "Cygnet" cores are due to emerge in 2011. Kingfisher is aimed at lower end smartphones and feature phones and digital TV applications. It is part of the Cortex-A family of processors.

"Cygnet" is a system design product designed to work with the Cortex-M series of cores, intended to accelerate system design.

The Mali "NG" graphics core will also succeed the currently available Mali T604 core, ARM said. The Mali NG will be based on the current architecture, ARM said. Announced last November, Mali graphics has been already licensed for feature & smartphones, computing, digital TVs and navigation, including Samsung's Mali-based Orion core and STMicroelectronics' STB design for their Mali-based STi7108.

Mali is expected to be shipping in volume in 2011.

The company also highlighted its roadmap as the company's IP licensees are moving to 20nm mamufacturing processes. in Q4 2010, Freescale signed subscription license for ARM?s advanced physical IP for deployment in a broad range of applications. In addition, Globalfoundries, IBM, Samsung and TSMC have already started 28nm delelopment and IBM is also collaborates with ARM to 14nm.

ARM also said that approximately six billion of chips produced in 2010 were either compatible or were based on ARM architecture. About 1.9 billion of those chips were actually powered by physical IP developed by ARM.
