Asus Chairman Jonney Shih today talked about the company's plans to release a smartphone in the U.S., and also remained cautious on the futue of Windows RT-based tablets running on ARM chips. In an interview with tech news website AllThingsD, Asus Chairmansaid that his company wwould not be be launching new Windows RT-based tablets running on ARM chips. He added that Asus would instead make new devices that run on Intel chips.

"The result is not very promising," he told AllThingsD, referring to the widely reported problems with Surface RT and the Asus VivoTab RT.

Shih also said that company was developing a smartphone that could be ready for release by 2014.

"For the phone, frankly speaking, we are still latecomers," he told AllThingsD. "We are making progress. I think next year maybe more reasonable."

Asus has already released Padfone, a combination smartphone-tablet device in which an Android smartphone docks with a larger screen.

Asus also makes a Fonepad 7-in. tablet that can make phone calls. In June, it updated the Fonepad with the Fonepad Note FHD6, which is part Android and part 6-in. tablet with a full-HD display.
