China To Remove IBM Servers In Banks In Spy Dispute: report

China To Remove IBM Servers In Banks In Spy Dispute: report

Enterprise & IT May 27,2014 0

Following the recent charges by U.S. prosecutors that Chinese military officers were hacking into American companies, China is reportedly pushing domestic banks to remove high-end servers made by IBM. Government agencies, including the People's Bank of China and the Ministry of Finance, are reviewing whether Chinese commercial banks' reliance on the IBM servers compromises the country's financial security, the Bloomberg reported citing people familiar with the matter.

The report has not been confirmed by the Chinese government.

U.S. federal prosecutors claim that five Chinese military officers targeted big-name American makers of nuclear and solar technology, stealing confidential business information, sensitive trade secrets and internal communications for competitive advantage.

China has objected strongly to the charges. On Monday, China accused the United States of "unscrupulous" cyber surveillance that included large-scale computer attacks against the Chinese government and Chinese companies.

Of course, any possible replacement of banks' systems would not be an easy task. In addition, there isnt't any Chinese-made hardware around that could handle the massive amount of data in the banking industry.
