Chrome Browser Gains Popularity Over Firefox, Windows 8's Expansion Decelerates

Chrome Browser Gains Popularity Over Firefox, Windows 8's Expansion Decelerates

Enterprise & IT Aug 3,2014 0

Web measurement vendor Net Applications has released data that show the growing popularity of Google's Chrome browser and that the Windows 8 OS is a poorer performer than Windows Vista. According to Net Applications' data released Friday, Chrome passed the 20% share milestone in July, tacking the 2nd place, while Mozilla's Mozilla's Firefox browser accounted for 15.1% of the desktop and laptop personal computer browsers used during the same month.

However, Chrome is still far behind IE in Net Applications' tallies. IE's share last month was 58%, down slightly from the month before.

Apple's Safari remained in a distant fourth place behind Firefox, with a user share of 5.2%. Meanwhile, Opera Software's Opera browser brought up the rear with a small 1% user share.

Another web analytics company, StatCounter, had different numbers for the browsers, mainly due to a different the company follows.

StatCounter's figures showed a Chrome usage share at 48.7%, Internet Explorer's at 23.5%, Firefox's at 19.3%, Safari's at 4.9%, and Opera's at 1.5%.

Net Applications also released figures related to the operating systems for July.

Windows 8 and 8.1 were running at the 12.5% of the world's desktop and notebook systems, a small drop of six-hundredths of a percentage point from June.

Windows 8 accounted for 13.6% of the personal computers running Microsoft's Windows.

While in June Windows 8's user share came dangerously close to the sluggish uptake tempo of Windows Vista, in July Windows 8's pace fell below Vista's for the first time.

While Windows 8 again lost user share in July, Windows 7 gained another seven-tenths of a percentage point to close the month with 51.2%. The surge has expected, since the recent uptick in computer sales has been due to businesses replacing the now-retired Windows XP with Windows 7.

Windows XP's user share fell half a percentage point in July, accounting for 24.8% of all personal computers, and 27.1% of only those running Windows.

Ireland's StatCounter had again different numbers for Windows. The company StatCounter pegged July's Windows 8 and 8.1 usage share at 15%, Windows 7's at 55.3%, XP's at 15.2% and Vista's at 3.5%.
