Console Graphics Cannot Match PCs: Nvidia

Console Graphics Cannot Match PCs: Nvidia

GPUs Sep 25,2013 0

PC gamers are one step beyond in terms of graphics power compared to the Xbox One and PS4, according to an interview at PC Power Play with NVIDIA Senior Vice President of Content and Technology Tony Tamasi. "It's no longer possible for a console to be a better or more capable graphics platform than the PC," Tamasi says.

He argues that consoles were more powerful than PCs just at the beginning of the 3D era, when Sony, Sega and Nintendo were the ones spending a lot of money developing graphics processing for the consumer platform. As 3d graphics became standard, PC graphics companies had taken on the brunt of R&D because they functioned at such a larger scale than the console companies.

"We're building GPUs at the limits of what?s possible with fabrication techniques. Nobody can build anything bigger or more powerful than what is in the PC at the moment. It just is not possible, but that wasn't the case in the last generation of consoles," he says. "Taken to the theoretical limits, the best any console could ever do would be to ship a console that is equal to the best PC at that time. But then a year later it's going to be slower, and it still wouldn't be possible due to the power limits."

Consoles are designed to be low-profile machines running in the living room and they draw 200-300W. On the other hand, PCs can have larger power sources - they can reach up to 1000w - and more powerful fans.
