DVS Announces 16X DVD-ROM Drive

Optical Storage Mar 15,2001 0

Digital Video Systems today announced that it has started delivering samples of its 16X DVD-ROM drive, DSR-1600H, to potential customers. The new drive automatically compensates for scratched or bent discs using proprietary error correction techniques, and is capable of reading all current DVD audio, video or computer data storage formats.

``Based on industry standard bench tests, the model DSR-1600H has demonstrated performance access time rates that are equal to or superior to any other 16X DVD-ROM drive currently on the market. Our new 16X DVD-ROM drive also incorporates DVS' proprietary Auto-centering System, which enables truly superior readability of eccentric or unbalanced discs,'' said Dr. Song Sim, who leads DVS' team of more than 40 technical staff devoted to DVD product development.

The model DSR-1600H drive will be sold for installation into new computer systems and re-sale as upgrade kits through retail channels. The new 16X DVD-ROM drive is designed to support all the major DVD and CD media, including:

DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, Photo CD, CD-DA, CD-ROM (Mode 1/2), CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM XA (Mode 2 Form 1/2), enhanced CD, and CD-I (Ready and Bridge).
Based on substantial tests of units produced to-date, the Model DSR-1600H drive has achieved the following speeds:

-Data Transfer Rate -- 16X (Max. 21,600 Kbytes/sec) for DVD and 48X (Max. 7200 Kbytes/sec, Mode 1) for CD

-Average Access Time -- 95 msec for DVD and 85 msec for CD

-Burst Transfer Rate -- 33.3/66.6 MB/sec for Ultra DMA 33/66 and 16.7 MB/sec for PIO Mode 4 and Multi Word DMA Mode 2.

This Model also features 256 KB of buffer memory with EIDE/ATAPI interface, supporting both horizontal and vertical mounting capabilities. It is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 4.0, as well as O/S 2 Warp, MS-DOS 3.0 or higher and Linux. This Model weighs 0.95 kg and measures 146 x 194.6 x 41.5 mm, including its bezel
