Intel Targets Tablets and Phones market With Chips Coming Next Year

Intel's president CEO Paul S. Otellini outlined the company's efforts to get its processors into tablet computers and smartphones that will go on sale next year. Otellini keynoted at Barclays Capital 2010 Global Technology Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Intel's executive estimated that more than 35 Intel Atom tablet designs (Moorestown) will appear in 2011, running Microsoft Windows, Android or MeeGo software. The tablets will be released by companies includng Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Fujitsu, Asus, Cisco, OpenPeak at&t and Acer.

"The consumer products will roll out over the first half of next year," Otellini said.



Intel also sees the Atom processors inside future smartphones, where the company is facing the strong competition from power-efficient chips based on ARM architecture and made by companies like Qualcomm and Marvell.

Otellini said that the company's second-generation Medfield chip for smartphones is now being sampled by Intel's customers and should ship next year and in 2012.

Intel is has already started shipping its new Sandy Bridge chips, which are expected to be in notebooks on store shares early in 2011. The Sandy Bridge chips, include graphics processing capability equivalent to low-end discrete graphics processors.



Intel will continue is strong growth in the PC market segment. The company claims that it is more than three years ahead its competitors in the silicon process technology. Intel's 3rd generation High-K/Metal Gate technology will be based on 22nm and will be applied in 2011.

Otellini also said that Intel is gaining traction in new segments such as storage system precessors and control processors for networking applications.

Otellini added that 2010 was the company's best year and estimated that the company's earning per share will be $2.00, while its goals is to have double digit revenue CARG and EPS CARG over the next few years.
