Lite-On IT to Produce HD-DVD Burners in 2007
Lite-On IT, the largest maker of optical disc drives in Taiwan, on August 18 announced it is developing half-height (H/H) HD-DVD burners, with a volume production target set for March 2007.
The company appears to retain a neutral position between Blu-ray (BD) and HD-DVD formats.
Lite-On IT maintains close business relations with Sony, a key member of the BD Association, and is an OEM/ODM DVD burner maker for Philips, also a key member of the association, through Philips BenQ Digital Storage (an R&D and marketing joint venture of Philips and BenQ). Mainly in this business context, Lite-On IT started production of H/H BD burners last month.
As a current backer of the HD DVD format, Japanese NEC is also expected to release it first HD DVD burners in 2007.
