Transfer Rate Reading Tests
- CD Format
The LiteON SOHW-1653S supports up to 48X reading speed for CD-R media and 24X for CD-RW media. Below are the transfer rate graphs, where we compare its performance against the other three drives:
As we can see from our tests, with CDR/CD media the drive has the fastest reading speeds in the comparison. Using CDRW media, the 1653S was, even if only marginally, the slowest reader.
- DVD FormatWith Single Layer media, the LiteON SOHW-1653S was the fastest drive in the comparison but speed differences between all four drives are very marginal. With Dual Layere DVD media, the Pioneer DVR-108 was way out in front.
The first layer of an OTP dual layer DVD-ROM is read exactly the same way as the first layer of the PTP disc we tested previously. The difference here is the reading strategy of the second layer of the disc. The beginning of the second layer is located in the outer part of the disc, so the drive starts reading from the outer tracks toward the inner part of the disc. The resulting graph is steady signifying good reading performance while the average reading speed for the Lite-On drive was 6.11x.
With DVD±R media, the 1653S was the slowest, reaching a maximum reading speed of ~6.2X. With ReWritable media, the difference in reading speeds between the drives is negligible. The Lite-On drive as was the case with the BenQ drive, maintained the same, steady speed of just over 6X, regardless of the media format.
