Mozilla Showcases Boot to Gecko OS

Mozilla Showcases Boot to Gecko OS

Smartphones Jan 23,2012 0

Mozilla showcased its new mobile operating system called "Boot to Gecko" (B2G) as well as the Firefox 11 at the "Mozilla Vision 2012" event held January 21st and 22nd, 2012 in Japan. Mozilla plans to make available to developers phones running the "Boot to Gecko" (B2G) OS this quarter, with product demos slated for the first quarter of 2012.

Mozilla had proposed the "Boot to Gecko" project last July, to pursue the goal of building a standalone operating system for mobile devices that would run applications primarily on the Web.

The new OS is based on Google's Android kernel and a Gecko Runtime. Functions of B2G include accelerometer, camera, messaging, telephony and power management, as well as Mozilla's phone user interface called "Gaia". Mozilla's demo phone is able to connect with an open web app store, feature sensors, vibrator, Bluetooth, USB and NFC functions. Mozilla also plans to deliver a full-featured web browser, an eBook reader, camera and a media player.

Mozilla demonstrated "Boot to Gecko" running on a Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone. The OS included a complete app home screen, contacts UI, it could make calls and send SMS. Also it is said to have sufficient power to run 3D games and videos.

Mozilla will deliver a framework that will allow developers to rewrite apps for each operating system such as iPhone's iOS, Android, and WP7.
