Nikon releases the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR
Nikon is pleased to announce the release of the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR, a high-magnification zoom lens compatible with full-frame/FX-format mirrorless cameras for which the Nikon Z mount has been adopted.
The NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR is a high-magnification zoom lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths — from 28 mm to 400 mm, a first among NIKKOR Z lenses. It realizes powerful imaging expression by capturing the finest details or facial expressions of distant subjects with approx. 14.2x zoom, the highest in its class*1 zoom ratio. Even in situations where the distance to the subject continuously changes, such as with sporting events, amusement park attractions and parade shows, users can enjoy shooting in a variety of situations with just this one lens.
In addition, with the minimum focus distance*2 of 0.2 m at the maximum wide-angle position and 1.2 m at the maximum telephoto position, this lens is also suitable for capturing close-ups and tabletop photos at short distances. With a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.35x, it is possible to capture subjects in a larger size, allowing for delicate depiction, such as with plants. While in the telephoto range, images in which the background bokeh can be expressed by getting closer to subjects. Although it is a super-telephoto with a range up to 400 mm, the compact and lightweight design gives it a weight of only approx. 725 g, the lightest in its class*1, making it easy to carry around not only while traveling, but for everyday use as well.
The NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR also adopts a stepping motor (STM) which enables fast autofocus drive, allowing rapid focus on moving subjects, and a vibration-reduction function with performance equivalent to a 5.0-stop*3 increase in shutter speed that is very effective for hand-held shooting. Furthermore, the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR supports linear MF operation*4 to facilitate focusing on the intended subject during video recording.
Nikon will continue to pursue a new dimension in optical performance while meeting users' needs, contributing to the development of imaging culture, with the hope of expanding possibilities for imaging expression.
*1Among lenses with a zoom ratio of 10x or over for full-frame/FX-format interchangeable-lens mirrorless cameras, announced as of March 27, 2024.
*2When capturing close-ups with the lens hood attached, take care that the lens hood does not come into contact with the subject.
*3Measured in accordance with CIPA standards with VR function set to "NORMAL", and zoom at the maximum telephoto position.
*4A function that shifts focus by a fixed amount according to the angle of control ring rotation, not the speed at which it is rotated, with manual focusing.
Primary features
Covers a broad range of focal lengths — from 28 mm to 400 mm, a first among NIKKOR Z lenses.
Realizes approx. 14.2x zoom, the highest zoom ratio in its class.
A minimum focus distance of 0.2 m at the maximum wide-angle position and a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.35x, allow users to get closer to their subjects for dynamic expression.
A total length of approx. 141.5 mm and a weight of approx. 725 g, the lightest lens in its class, make this compact and lightweight lens easy to carry and less of a burden during hand-held shooting.
Stable VR performance equivalent to a 5.0-stop increase in shutter speed effectively reduces blurring in dimly lit surroundings and with hand-held shooting.
When paired with a compatible camera, Synchro VR can be activated to achieve up to 5.5-stop stabilization*1 by combining in-camera VR and lens VR.
Adoption of a stepping motor (STM) enables high-speed AF drive.
The design takes video recording into consideration with stable exposure, and provides functions such as focus-breathing suppression that effectively reduces shifting of the angle of view when focusing.
Support for linear MF drive enables smooth focusing.
Comes with a compact, square lens hood that combines superior performance and usability, offering ghosting reduction and enabling zooming operation even when attached inverted.
Designed to be dust- and drip-resistant with thorough sealing on various portions including movable parts of the lens barrel to keep dust and water droplets from entering the lens.*2
*1Measured in accordance with CIPA standards with VR function set to "NORMAL" when combined with cameras that support Synchro VR.
*2Thorough dust- and drip-resistance is not guaranteed in all situations or under all conditions.
