SEAGATE SPEAKS ON HARD DRIVE FOR CONSUMER DEVICES AT DISKCON ASIA PACIFIC 2002 CONFERENCE
Seagate, the world's largest supplier of disc drives, and the leader in the Consumer Electronics (CE) hard disc drive market, will give the keynote address at this year's Diskcon event held in Singapore. James Chirico, Seagate general manager and senior vice president, Worldwide Operations, will address the state the of disc drive industry in the CE space today and discuss the Company's efforts to capitalize on future opportunities in the CE storage market.
Hard drives have come a long way. Capacity has increased tenfold in just three years, and cost-per-gigabyte has improved just as fast. Today's Seagate U Series delivers 80 Gbytes for the same price as 8 Gbytes three years ago—plenty of room for storage-hungry applications such as TV shows or movies. Reliability continues to improve, especially in closed-environment consumer-electronics products. And we have optimized performance for consumer-electronics applications, where smooth streams of audio and video information are paramount.
"The hard drive will continue to aggregate digital content, help manage it all, and provide the capacity for applications," said Chirico. "It will do all this quietly and in the background, without getting scratched, lost, or mislabeled. As a leader in consumer applications, Seagate continues to deliver the innovative hard drive that provides a combination of performance, high reliability and low acoustics that today's CE applications require."
"Our ability to deliver better hard drive is made possible with increased automation, more advanced process technology and a technically skilled work force. All these enable Seagate to build increasingly sophisticated and advanced storage products to meet the growing need for storage, the infrastructure that is helping to fuel the growth of today¿s computing environment," he added.
Seagate will set up storage demonstrations with Microsoft's Xbox to highlight storage in digital gaming experience. Seagate hard disc drive enables gaming consoles like the Microsoft Xbox to deliver awesome graphics, online game play, customizable music tracks and more. Additionally, Seagate will also highlight the enhancements a hard drive adds to the Personal Video Recorder (PVR) such as simultaneous recording of two television shows while displaying two others on the screen.
The U Series disc drive family is designed specifically for use in consumer electronics and volume PCs, and its popularity has fueled Seagate's growth as the leader in CE storage. Featuring its exclusive "sound barrier technology" (SBT), the U Series is the world's quietest hard drive for mainstream desktop computers and Digital Video Recorders. The U Series is available in a unique consumer electronics configuration: the U Series CE, for superior audio-video streaming, quiet operation and reduced power use. U Series disc drives offer best-in-class reliability and ship with Seagate's exclusive 3D Defense System™ for increased reliability and data protection. Seagate's 3D Defense System includes the patented SeaShell™ packaging, soft SeaShield® protective cover, SeaTools¿ Suite diagnostic software and the award-winning DiscWizard™ installation software.
Seagate shipped the world's first disc drives for CE products in 1997 and has led in the development and integration of video recording functionality in storage devices. With nearly three million drives shipped into the CE market, the Company is currently delivering its sixth generation of products for consumer devices, and continues to develop storage technologies with leading CE makers to accelerate the future of home entertainment.
